![]() Michael James Groff of Christiana died at home on Saturday, August 29, 2015. He was 51. Mr. Groff was born in Lancaster, a son of Maynard and Sarah Groff of Christiana. Before his illness, he was a truck driver. Mr. Groff loved his dogs and will be missed by the many dogs he raised at his home. Carolyn A. Neil, 71, of Lilac Drive New Providence, PA died Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Lancaster General Hospital.
She was the loving wife of Robert B. Neil with whom she celebrated 40 years of marriage. Born in Rosedale, MD, she was the daughter of the late John & Carole Summers Majchrzak. Carolyn had previously been employed as a cashier for Safeway Grocery Store for 15 years, and then as an assistant manager for Travel Centers of America for 12 years, from which she retired. ![]() Daniel LeRoy Melrath, Sr., 66, of Colora, MD, formerly of Oxford, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2015 at Johns Hopkins Hospital Baltimore, MD. He was the husband of Bernadette Ignatowski Melrath. Born in West Grove, he was the son of Harry Melrath of Oxford and the late Melba Bise Melrath. Daniel was a member of the American Legion Mason Dixon Post #194, Rising Sun, MD, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2666, Oxford and the Terrace Athletic Club New Castle, DE. He enjoyed gardening, going crabbing, working on cars and taking care of his beloved Babee. ![]() Edna M. Byers Trimble, 89, formerly of Holtwood, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2015 at Conestoga View. A life-long resident of Southern Lancaster County, she was born in Drumore Township and was the daughter of the late Wayne and Mabel Barr Byers. She was the wife of the late James C. Trimble, Sr. A homemaker, Edna enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. ![]() J. Marlin Kreider, age 82, of Millwood Road, Lancaster, PA and formerly of Peach Bottom, died on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at Hospice & Community Care, Mt. Joy, PA. He was the husband of the late Mabel Brabson Kreider who died on October 10, 1992. Born in Lancaster County, he was the son of the late Landis and Ruth Herr Kreider. Marlin and his wife Mabel owned and operated the former Robert Fulton Inn, Peach Bottom, PA and he also owned and operated his own contracting business. He was a member of Little Britain Presbyterian Church, and was a 50+ year member of Wakefield Lions Club. Marlin also was a member of the Disaster Response Committee of the Atlantic Northeast District, Church of the Brethren. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Mr. Kreider was a graduate of Quarryville High School. ![]() Calvin D. Keene of Bart Township died at Lancaster General Hospital on Thursday, August 20, 2015, following a brief illness. He was 76. Mr. Keene was born in Bart Township, a son of the late Roy C. and Frances Beyer Keene. He graduated from Solanco High School. Mr. Keene worked on the family farm. He was named the Outstanding Cooperator for the Lancaster County Conservation District in 2004. He also earned the Century Farm Award for keeping the farm in his family for more than 100 years. He was named the Southern Lancaster County Republican of the Year in 2015. ![]() Myrtle Vernice Phillips, 81, of East Walnut Grove Road, Fawn Grove, PA died at her residence on Wednesday, August 19, 2015. She was the widow of Thelmas James “TJ” Phillips who died October 28, 2013. They were married in 1950. Born in Kirkwood, PA she was the daughter of the late James Elbert and Minnie Mary Blevins Seats. Myrtle was both a homemaker and a retired corporate secretary for T.J. Phillips & Son, Inc. of Fawn Grove. Her hobbies included flowers, gardening, and traveling. ![]() Stephanie A. Jackson, 43, of Sproul Road, Kirkwood, PA died Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Lancaster General Hospital. Stephanie attended Oxford School District and graduated from Solanco High School in 1990. She had been formerly employed by the US Postal Service, as a waitress for Cromwell’s in Wilmington, DE, and as a packer for Amazon. She attended Connections Community Church. ![]() Charles William Sacks, 76, of Cochranville passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 15, 2015. He was the husband of Carolyn Painter Sacks with whom he shared ten years of marriage. Born in West Grove, he was the son of the late Morris and Ellen Bullock Sacks. He graduated from Oxford Area High School Class of 1957. Charles was a veteran of the US Army and served in the Military Police at Camp David and Fort Richie, MD. Charles was part business owner of Morris Sacks & Son, Oxford. He was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church, Kirkwood and served as Treasurer and was the lighting and sounds person for many years. Charles was also a member of the Roy W. Gibson Post #535 American Legion, Oxford and Thunder Hill Gun Club, Potter Co., PA. He enjoyed Model A’s antique cars, gardening, square/round dancing and especially enjoyed his three younger step-grandchildren. ![]() Kenneth A. Swayne, 72, of Strasburg, entered into rest unexpectedly at home on Saturday, August 15, 2015. Born in East Drumore Township, he was a son of the late Arnold and Anna (Reed) Swayne. Ken and his wife, Barbara J. (Eckman) Swayne had celebrated 53 years of marriage in December. Ken owned and operated the former Swayne Disposal Service in Quarryville. He was a member of the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge class of 1978. Ken enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and always could be found tinkering with something. Ken was also an avid Philadelphia sports fan. Surviving besides his wife are sons; Rick, husband of Cathy of Quarryville and Mike husband of Loie of Strasburg along with 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. |
