James L. Hastings, 80, of Kirkwood, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, September 24, 2019. Born in Kirkwood, he was the son of the late Hayes A. and Marion (Rineer) Hastings. Jim’s wife, Phyllis (Gregg) Hastings died in 2003. Jim was a farmer that who in later years went to work in the maintenance department at the former Pillsbury Company in Parksburg. After retiring from Pillsbury he worked for the Solanco School District as a custodian and after retiring from Solanco he kept busy transporting his Amish neighbors. Jim was a member of Union Presbyterian Church. He was a past master of the Christiana Masonic Lodge #417, a member of Zembo Shriners and also the Black Stump Hunting Club. Jim loved spending time with his family. The Southern End has lost a great “behind the scenes” worker and volunteer. J. Stanley “Butch” Stauffer, Jr., 82, of Quarryville, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2019 at Hospice and Community Care following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born in Lancaster to the late J. Stanley “Stiff” Sr. and Sara (Southern) Stauffer. A life-long resident of Quarryville, Butch is survived by a son, Scott, husband of Suzanne Stauffer of Quarryville; a daughter, Kristen, wife of Stephen Robertson of Lititz; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Frances Reyburn of Oxford; and Elizabeth Miller of Quarryville. A graduate of Solanco High School, he was vice president of his senior class and was active in the FFA. An avid ball player, he was the lead-off hitter for his school’s baseball team. He played in modified softball leagues for over 50 years and continued to play slow pitch softball with the Willow Street kids and cubs team, playing well into his seventies. Sonja K. Tressler, 78, of Quarryville, PA, passed away on September 21, 2019 at Hospice and Community Care, Mt. Joy.
Born in Cumberland, MD, a daughter of the late Earl and Ruth Middleton Minnick. Earl W. Young, of Peach Bottom, entered into rest unexpectedly on Saturday, September 21, 2019. He was in his 95th year. Born in Harford County, MD, he was the son of the late Lee B. and Jennie (Kilby) Young. Earl’s wife, JoAnne (Grubb) Young passed away in 2012. Earl was a lifelong farmer in the southern end. He was a 75 year member of Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church. In his earlier years, Earl was a member of the Fulton Grange and Young Farmers Association. His motto in life was, Faith, Family & Farm. Loretta A. Capuano, 91, of Peach Bottom, formerly of Wilmington, Delaware, entered into rest on Friday, September 20, 2019 at her home.
Born in Wilmington, DE, she was the daughter of the late Vincent and Caetano “Katie” Capuano. Carl David Strickler, Sr., 72, of Willow Street, entered into rest on Friday, September 20, 2019 at his home. Born in Staunton, Virginia, he was the son of the late Clarence D. and Ina L. (Rankin) Strickler. Carl shared 53 years of marriage with his high school sweetheart, Suzanne (Wittlinger) Strickler. Carl had been employed as a sales associate for Snavely and Dosch, Inc. in Willow Street and Quarryville. After retirement, he had worked for the former Darrenkamps Market in Willow Street. He was a life-member of Rawlinsville Fire Company and had served as chief for several years. He was a member of Grace Community Church in Willow Street and a founding member of the Lancaster County Cruisers. Thelma L. Stauffer, 90, of Holtwood, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at Harrison House of Christiana.
She was the wife of the late Roy A. Stauffer. Thelma was the daughter of the late Roy C. and Lizzie (Brubaker) Wade. For many years she worked as a seamstress. Jessica Brant Hammer, 30, of Lancaster, entered into rest unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at her home. Born in Concord, California, she was the daughter of Jacques Emile Pittet and Margarete Caldeira Brant Carvalho and step-daughter of William Hayes. Kathleen W. Keene, 75, of Christiana, entered into rest on Tuesday, September 10, 2019. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Jacob A. and Beatrice (Boose) Whitelock. She was the loving wife of Richard C. Keene for 51 years. Kathy was an active member of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon, taught Sunday school, and sang in the choir. She also worked part-time in the deli at Fergies for 11 years. Above all, Kathy loved being a mom and was active in the lives of all four of her sons. Guy Russell Lloyd, III, 74, of Maxwell Drive, Quarryville, PA passed away peacefully at his residence following a lengthy illness on Sunday, September 8, 2019. He and his wife Esther M. Stoltzfus Lloyd celebrated 53 years of marriage. Born in Lancaster County, he was the son of the late Guy Russell and Verna Doerr Lloyd, Jr. Russ had been a self-employed painter and wallpaper hanger. He was a member of Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren. Russ was an avid pool shooter and enjoyed collecting antique toys, woodworking, and spending time with his family and friends. |
