Melvin Z. Horst, age 81 of Cochranville, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Arlene Burkholder Horst with whom he was happily married for 58 years. Born in Ephrata, he was the son of the late Edwin H. and Catharine B. Zimmerman Horst. Melvin was a member of Millwood Mennonite Church. He worked as a dairy farmer until 1991 when he owned and operated Horst Grain Roasting. He worked actively in the business until 2022. In his free time, he loved golf cart rides at his home in Florida and spending time with people, especially his children and grandchildren. Larry Mylin, known to many as Tim, 78, of Quarryville, passed away unexpectedly at his home, October 25, 2023. Born and raised in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Herbert J. and Hazel (Handel) Mylin. Being born on a farm in Lancaster County, Tim quickly learned he had a passion for riding, raising, and breeding Arabian horses. This remained a hobby of his into adulthood. He was a natural historian of Western and Native American culture and could quickly provide countless dates and facts on the subjects. In October of 1965, Tim joined the United States Army to honorably serve his country, until 1967. He recounted many stories of his service time but was most proud of serving with the 101st Airborne. Una F. Todd, 94, of Elkton, MD, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Christiana Hospital, Newark, DE. She was the wife of the late Walter L. Todd and preceded in death by her 1st husband James A. Springer. Born in Hicksville, NY she was the daughter of the late Glenn W. and Pauline Gordon Fraver. Una was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, Oxford and former member of Union Presbyterian Church. She was beneficial and a valuable part of her 1st husband’s business, Springer’s Arco, Russellville, PA. David E. Reed, 66, of Quarryville, passed away on October 24, 2023, surrounded by his loving family, to join his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was born on September 3, 1957, in Steubenville, OH, to the late Katherine Porter Reed and Wilbur Reed. David leaves behind a rich legacy of love and warmth. He is survived by his devoted wife of 20 years, Rita Rhoads Martinez Reed, and his cherished stepchildren Juan Martinez (Ashlee Griggs), Carlos Martinez (Elizabeth Yohey), Jerome Martinez (Melissa Adams), Rosa Martinez, and Manuel Martinez (Kaitlin Marquis), who brought immense joy to his life. His heart also belonged to his ten grandchildren, whose laughter and mischief filled his days with happiness. God called Robert (Bob) L. McConnell, 72, of Nottingham, PA home on Sunday, October 22, 2023, to be reunited with his beloved son, Jeffrey L. McConnell and his twins Michael L. and Melinda A. McConnell. Despite always reporting that he felt “mean and miserable,” Bob could be counted on for a good laugh due to his quick wit and a caring shoulder due to his incredible generosity with his time. He lived a quiet life of humble service helping family, friends and even strangers in need. Carl J. “Spike” Walton, 52, of Drumore, PA, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2023 at Milton S Hershey Medical Center, Hershey.
Born in West Chester, PA he was the son of Carol Astheimer Patterson of Oxford and the late Issac Walton. Spike was an avid fisherman and enjoyed boating. Howard K. “Buck” Fisher, 98, of New Providence, entered into rest on Sunday October 22, 2023 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. Born in Holtwood, he was the son of the late Charles and Clara E. (Kreider) Fisher. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 78 years, Arlene M. Fisher on October 6, 2023. Buck owned and operated his own plumbing business for many years. He was an active member of Providence Church, where he taught Sunday school and served on church council for over 20 years. Buck was the Supervisor for Providence Twp. for 17 years and was a member of the Washington Lodge # 156 F.& A.M. He also enjoyed horseback riding and hunting. Amy Louise Kreider, 94, formerly of Quarryville, passed from this life to the arms of Jesus on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at Landis Homes Communities in Lititz. She grew up in Strasburg, the daughter of the late Abram and Miriam (Metzler) Groff. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis D Kreider, formerly of Quarryville. Amy learned the tasks of farm and home while growing up on her family’s farm in Strasburg. She was a part of one of the first classes to graduate at the newly formed Lancaster Mennonite High School. After marriage, Amy moved to Quarryville and devoted her life to the care of her family and support of her husband in the family dairy farm and in Ellis’ ministry at Mechanic Grove Mennonite Church. Robert Marshall Hartman, 84, of Oxford, PA, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at Ware Presbyterian Village. “Your husband may be the mailman, but it took me to deliver the male!” the doctor proudly announced on Jan. 7, 1939. And so, Bertha and Robert Lee Hartman welcomed their third child, Robert Marshall, who would join big sisters Diane and Nellie on Peach Street in Philadelphia, PA. “Bobby” would soon be joined by younger brother, Jack, rounding out their happy clan. Bob was always drawn to water, and to life. At age 14, during a camping trip, Bob dove into the water and rescued a drowning man. He received the Boy Scout Certificate of Heroism. Earl L. Schroeder, 81, of New Providence died at Lancaster General Hospital Thursday, October 1910/23/2023
Earl L. Schroeder, age 81, of New Providence, passed away at the Lancaster General Hospital on Thursday, October 19, 2023. He was the husband of his childhood sweetheart, Hazel A. Rhoads Schroeder, with whom he celebrated 61 years of marriage on February 24th. He was born in Lancaster, son of the late Earl L. Sr. & Elizabeth Hagen Schroeder. He was an iron worker for the Anaconda Aluminum Plant in Columbia Falls, Montana, he then worked as a self employed painter. Earl and his father owned and operated Schroeder’s Guns & Supplies for approximately 45 years where they bought, sold, customized and repaired firearms from which he finally retired. |
