Robert A. Eberly of Reading died at Reading Hospital on Tuesday, March 25, 2014. He was 86. Mr. Eberly was a son of the late John J. and Laura K. Meck Eberly. He lived in Quarryville before moving to Reading. He grew up on the family farm in Camargo and attended the nearby one-room school. He was a graduate of Quarryville High School. Mr. Eberly worked for an electrical contractor before serving with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. James Leroy Brown of Peach Bottom died at home on Saturday, March 22, 2014. He was 86. Mr. Brown was born in Nottingham, a son of the late Harold Leroy and Polly Duncan Brown. He graduated from Oxford Area High School in 1946. Mr. Brown enlisted in the Delaware National Guard, where he served for 21 months and rose to the rank of sergeant. He was deployed during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he became a self-employed mushroom farmer and a commercial compost mixer. He later managed Interstate Mushroom Co., West Grove. Janet Colleen Kellogg of Pine Blvd., New Providence, died at Lancashire Hall, Lancaster, on Saturday, March 15, 2014. She was 78.
Mrs. Kellogg was born in Baltimore, Md., a daughter of the late Clair Alfred and Lorena I. Slick Byroade. She was a homemaker. Arlene J. "Toots" Thomas of Christiana died at Hospice and Community Care, Mt. Joy, on Friday, March 7, 2014. She was 82. Mrs. Thomas was born in Gap, a daughter of the late Clyde H. and Susan Myers Trego. She worked for Grumelli's Farm Service, Quarryville, for more than 30 years. Mrs. Thomas was a member of the Christiana United Methodist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Christiana Fire Company. Mary E. Angeline of Quarryville died at her daughter's home on Monday, March 17, 2014. She was 76.
Mrs. Angeline was born in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Charles and Ruth Winters Greer. She worked for Dutch Town & Country Restaurant and for Gap Diner. Deborah Charles Pannell of Peach Bottom Rd., Peach Bottom, died at her daughter's home on Wednesday, March 12, 2014. She was 62. Mrs. Pannell was born in Lancaster, a daughter of C.J. Charles of New Providence and the late Marianne Geist Charles. She was a homemaker and was also a van driver for Shultz Transportation Company. Elsie M. Murphy Lowery of Stanton Rd., Quarryville, died at Ware Presbyterian Village, Oxford, on Friday, March 21, 2014. She was 81. Mrs. Lowery was born in Eden Township, a daughter of the late Aurel and Stella Myers Murphy. She worked at Aberdeen Proving Grounds and also worked for Robert M. Book Insurance. She retired from Murray Insurance Co. in 1988. Mrs. Lowery was a past president of the Quarryville American Legion Auxiliary; served as treasurer of Quarryville Soroptimist International; and was secretary and treasurer of the Quarryville Businessmen's Golf Tournament. She also served as treasurer for the Tuesday morning senior bowling league in Strasburg. Grace E. Labezius of Rohrerstown died at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community on Thursday, March 20, 2014. She was 98. Mrs. Labezius was born in Bethel, a daughter of the late Leigh and Minnie Fisher Ressler. She worked as an assembler at the former Hubley Toy Company, Lancaster. Mrs. Labezius was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Lancaster. She was also a member of Moose Lodge #299, Lancaster. Jonathan K. Kurtz died at Harrison Senior Living, Christiana, on Tuesday, March 18, 2014. He was 85. Mr. Kurtz was born in Morgantown, a son of the late Abram E. and Katie S. King Kurtz. He was a farmer, carpenter, and mason. Mr. Kurtz was a member of Calvary Independent Baptist Church, Quarryville. He enjoyed spending time with his family and going out to breakfast with his friends. Virginia Ehlers of Kirkwood died at home on Thursday, March 20, 2014. She was 86. Mrs. Ehlers was born in Annapolis, Md., a daughter of the late Albert C. and Olga Elizabeth Malone Davidson. She was raised in Harbeson, Delaware, and attended schools in Georgetown, Del. She lived in Delaware and West Chester before moving to Kirkwood. Mrs. Ehlers worked for the Chester County Head Start program, Simplex Time Recorder Company, West Chester, and the Sea Horse Restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, Del. She also worked as medical transcriptionist in Lewes, Del. |
