![]() Donna Powers Kauffman 76 of Oxford, PA passed away on Saturday May 25, 2024 with her children by her side. She was the daughter of the late Roy S. Powers and Cossie Lee Powers (Wilson). Born in Lynchburg, VA she was the wife of the late David G. Kauffman, Sr. Donna and her family moved to Oxford in 1958. She was a homemaker and accompanied her husband with farming until 1983. Together they had a home daycare while farming. Donna was also a very active member of The Union Fire Company #1 and was the cook for the UFC#1 Banquet Hall for many years. She then went to work for Southern Chester County Hospital (SCCMC) until her illness. She loved her job and made many friends there. Donna loved to cook and be with family and friends. Since her illness she kept in touch with friends over the phone and always prayed for those in need. Anita Frey Barthelson, age 90, of Chestertown, Md, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore.
Anita was predeceased by her loving husband Norman A. Barthelson who died in 2017. Anita was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1934, the daughter of the late Frederick H. and Anna Huber Frey, immigrants from Germany. The family moved to Lancaster and she spent her early years growing up on a farm. She was proud to say she was a "farm girl". Anita graduated from Solanco High School in 1952 and moved to Wilmington, DE to attend Goldey Beacom Business School and started working for Atlas Powder Company as a secretary. Her whole career was with the same company (which changed names many times) and she retired as an executive secretary from Astra Zeneca in 1990. Anita and Norm lived in Kennett Square but shortly after retiring moved to Lewes, DE. They enjoyed traveling. Anita was a dressmaker all her life and started quilting after retirement, making many beautiful quilts for her family. She also had a passion for gardening. James R. Farmer, age 50, of Nottingham passed away at home on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.
He was married to Helen Brinton Farmer for 23 years. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Carl E. And Gloria Weidman Farmer. James enjoyed bowling, participating in many leagues throughout his life with his family. He always looked forward to the Farmer family picnic. He loved Spider-Man, Comics, D&D, football, thunderstorms and enjoying fires during the summer. He also enjoyed NASCAR just like his parents. He always looked forward to family game day at his sister’s house where they would play board and card games. James enjoyed golfing, visiting the theater, spontaneous outing dates with Helen, Diamond Dot Paintings, Legos, and learning to crochet. ![]() James A. Murphy, 81, of Quarryville, entered into rest on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the son of the late Aurel and Stella (Meyers) Murphy. Jim was a graduate of Solanco High School. He went on to work as a welder, having managed at the former Adamson Tank in New Providence for many years, he eventually retired from Steel Fabrications in West Willow. Jim was an avid Phillies fan and also enjoyed Penn State Football and NASCAR. He will be missed by his beloved cat, Sweetie. ![]() Susan K. “Sue” Ferrari, 79, of Willow Street, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Saturday, May 18, 2024. She was the wife of the late Frank F. Ferrari, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage at the time of his passing in 2017. Born in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late Robert C. Jr., and Katherine L. (Derr) Welty. Sue was a graduate of William Allen High School, class of 1963. She then attended Susquehanna University, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Music Education, graduating in 1967. Sue’s first teaching job was a position in the Hershey School District. During this time she met Frank and later married. She then moved to Lancaster and taught Music Education in the Lampeter-Strasburg School District. She spent many years homeschooling her youngest four children and raising her family. As her children got older and left home, Sue obtained certifications in counseling, and became an ordained minister. She served as the Executive Director and Board President of a local prayer counseling center, Breath of Life Ministries International (BOLM), and also worked as a counselor in the Lancaster County Prison System, as well as through Water Street Mission. Sue also worked for a time, as a chaplain at Hershey Medical Center and for numerous local businesses who provided Chaplaincy Services for their employees. She was still working at BOLM up to the time of her passing. ![]() Margaret Naomi (Tucker) Edwards entered in the presence of her Lord and Saviour on May 21, 2024 at 12:10am, in Quarryville, Pennsylvania. Born on May 29, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John Clifton Tucker Jr. and Florence Crabtree Tucker. Margaret was born and raised in West Chester, graduating from West Chester High School. While in school, Margaret was employed as a part time secretary for General Motors in West Chester. Shortly after graduating high school, Margaret married Richard Willis Edwards Sr., who she met on a blind date to a school dance, set up by her best friend and Richard's brother. Richard and Margaret married on September 10, 1954. This upcoming September would have been their 70th wedding anniversary. After marriage, Margaret joined Richard on the dairy and mushroom farm in West Grove. Together with their children, Richard and Margaret left West Grove and moved to Oxford. In Oxford they re-established and built their own mushroom houses. Richard credited Margaret for much of their success in running the business, by helping with the bookwork, keeping things in order, working in the packing room or wherever help was needed. Both served on different boards and supported each other in organizations they were a part of. ![]() Robert Daniel Wagner, III (Bim), 70, of Cochranville, PA, passed away on Monday May 20, 2024 at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA. He was the husband of Patricia A. Peterson Wagner. Born in Lebanon, PA he was the son of Betty J. Donmoyer Cimellaro and the late Robert D. Wagner, II. Robert was a veteran of the US Marine Corps and served during the Vietnam War. He was employed with Manfredi Mushroom as a truck driver for over 40 years and transported horses for Ralph G. Smith. Robert was a devoted husband, father and friend to many. He would give you the shirt off of his back to anyone in need. Robert was very well known for his passion for baking, especially cheesecakes. His in-home business was Ellie’s Cheesecake Delightful Baked Goods. ![]() Donald Edward Porter, Jr., 61, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 18, 2024, after battling a life-threatening illness for over a year. Born the son of Donald Edward and Phyllis (Doss) Porter, he spent most of his life in Wawa, PA. He was baptized in faith on March 25, 2001. He attended Garnet Valley School where he had many friends including his best friend and loving faithful wife, Brenda Marino. They built their first home together. He worked in construction, maintenance and was a fork lift operator and had many work ethics. Donald loved building classic cars with his son and showing them in car shows with his family. He also loved rock n roll, cooking, camping and sports, mainly the Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia Phillies. ![]() Richard Willis Edwards Sr., 92, of Kirkwood, Pennsylvania, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on May 06, 2024 in Quarryville, Pennsylvania. Born on October 24, 1931 in Jonesboro, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Jason Ralph and Floetta Jewel (Blevins) Edwards Sr. He was the husband of the late Hellen (Waller) Edwards, who passed away shortly after the birth of their son Richard Jr. Later he remarried to Margaret Naomi (Tucker) Edwards, on September 9,1954, with who they were married for almost 70 years. Richard grew up a dairy farmer. He never finished his Senior year in Avon Grove, but instead passed his GED test and joined the Air Force in 1950. After training, he served for 4 years in the Korean War as an air guard on the runway. After his time of service, Richard returned to dairy farming and also began mushroom farming. He eventually left dairy farming and went full time mushroom farming, which he grew and ran his business for 32 years in Oxford, Pennsylvania. In the summer months, he worked for Chrysler, GM, and Lukensteal. Richard was the first mushroom grower, in Oxford, to have AC in the mushroom houses and was successful, which enabled him to run the business all year round. ![]() Albert L. “Al” Warfel, age 73, of New Providence passed away Saturday, May 19, 2024 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was married to Leda Fezette Warfel with whom he would have celebrated 20 years of marriage on June 6th. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Albert Warfel and the late Pauline Fitzkee Warfel Rineer. Al was an excavator for Andrews Excavating for 50 years. Some of his favorite hobbies included building long rifles, participating in and watching all shooting sports and restoring old tractors. Al was a member of the NRA, SLCFSA, and the Garand Collectors. |
