Richard E. Harvey, Sr. age 85 of Kirkwood, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at the Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of Dorothy Crawford Harvey with whom he celebrated 67 years of marriage. Born in Peach Bottom, he was the son of the late Chester L. and Arabelle Neff Harvey. Richard was a member of Union Presbyterian Church where he served on the cemetery committee. He held many jobs over the years, including; truck driver for L.M. Prange, Edgar M. Herr, and Hostetter Grain, welder for New Holland Machine, and a farmer. He was a Colerain Township Supervisor for 2-terms, mowed the Colerain Park, and helped with the maintenance of the Little League field at that park. He was a member of the Washington Lodge #156 in Quarryville. He was known as “Sleepy” as part of the original Bakers Gang. In his free time, Richard loved going to Rough and Tumble Engineers Museum, helping make funnel cakes with his wife, Dottie for the Farm Women #15, watching tractor pulls, rodeos, and cowboy TV. Esther Root, of Lititz, and formerly of Strasburg, passed peacefully on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 one day before the anniversary of the death of her son, Terry Root, who passed 54 years ago. She was the wife of the late Walter E. Root who died July 21, 2022. Esther was born July 29, 1933 in Rawlinsville, PA, to the late Adam Lewis and Ella Mae (Douts) Winters. Esther was a loving mother to her two sons, Timothy Root (Reta MacMackin-Root) of Key West, FL., Troy W. Root of Queens, NY; a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren, Jennifer (Root) Russell (David Kitch) of Mountville, Jill Root of Lancaster and their mother Linda Hoover Root and Gerisue Root of Key West, FL and her mother Reta MacMackin-Root. She was a dedicated and proud great grandmother to Jordan Russell of Conestoga, Madison Russell of Mountville and Caleb and Ava Hutchinson of Lancaster. Esther was an amazing cook and baker and she always made the special foods and treats that the family enjoyed so much. While Walter, (Pap), was taking the children and grandchildren to their various sports, Esther would be in the kitchen cooking an amazing meal for their return. Her love of God and family never wavered thru good times and bad. Esther and Walter were married for 68 years. Margaret Elizabeth “Betty” Little, 94, of Quarryville, entered into rest peacefully at her home on Monday, December 26, 2022. Born in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Sarah E. (Gittens) Riley. She was the loving wife of the late H. Joseph Little for 64 years at the time of his passing in 2017. Betty was a true caregiver, a trait which served her well as a long-time Registered Nurse. Betty graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and went on to work as a surgical and private duty nurse. She served as the Assistant Director of Nursing at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community for many years, retiring in 1992. Ivan H. Witt Jr., age 74, of Oxford, PA, formerly of Havertown, PA died December 22, 2022 at Christiana Care Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Ivan H. Witt Sr., who died when Ivan was an infant, and his beloved mother Enis (Monterastelli) W. Best and her husband Frederick J. Best. Van graduated in 1966 from Havertown High School where he excelled in wrestling. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in June of 1968 where he served until he was medically discharged in May of 1970. Upon his return home Van enjoyed listening to Phillies games on the front porch, taking and developing photographs, and listening to classic 70’s music. Earl J. Pickel, 86, formerly of New Holland, passed away on December 19, 2022. Born in Georgetown, PA, Earl was the son of the late E. Earl Pickel and Kathryn Ranck Pickel. He is survived by his wife Linda Evans Pickel with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage with on August 14th. He had been a resident of Willow Valley North Communities since 2007. Mr. Pickel was an English teacher, a choral director, and a vocal soloist. He graduated from New Holland High School in 1954, Millersville University in 1958, and Temple University in 1961, where he received a Master’s degree. Alice Faye Eckman, age 70, formally of Conowingo, MD, passed away on Monday, December 26, 2022 at Citizens Care Center after a courageous battle with MS.
She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Leo and Esther Fry Eckman. She retired from Aberdeen Proving Ground. She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and served as a board member at one time. Faye also was an excellent baker. She also enjoyed traveling and playing cards. She is survived by a brother, Allen Eckman of Rising Sun, MD. Doris J. Kudia of Conestoga, 79, passed away December 24, 2022, surrounded by her family after a brief illness. Also known as Nanny Kat, she was born in Lancaster to the late Chester and Mildred Kilburn. Doris spent her career helping others as a nurse. It was as an ER nurse Doris met her husband, the late Carl R. Kudia. They married in April of 1965 and spent 37 years together before his passing in 2002. Nanny Kat’s favorite holiday was Christmas, she enjoyed setting up her decorations and spending it with her family. She fondly reminisced about her trips to Hawaii and the Outer Banks. She loved good coffee and the company of her beloved grandchildren. Lonnie G. Baird, formerly of East 4th Street, Quarryville, went to be with the Lord on December 24th, at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Home after a one year decline in his health. Lonnie was born in Mountain City, TN on October 30, 1936, son of Abner and Jessie Boyd Baird. He was the husband of the late Barbara Baird (Smith), who passed away on June 4th, 2005. Lonnie was also predeceased by his only child, Lonnie Baird Jr., and two brothers, Abner Baird, Jr. and Joe Baird. Wanda L. Wanda L. Sauder, age 64, of Holtwood, passed away at the Lancaster General Hospital on Saturday, December 24, 2022. She was the wife of Donald J. Sauder, with whom she would have celebrated 17 years of marriage on January 5th. She was preceded in death by her first husband David F. Irwin, II, who passed away on April 10, 2005. She was born in Paradise, daughter of the late Charles & Doris Jean Keen Nickel. Elizabeth M. Nolt, 85, of Peach Bottom, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at Fairmount Homes in Ephrata.
She was the loving wife of Amos Z. Nolt who died in January of 2021. They shared 64 years of marriage. She was a faithful member of Fairmount Mennonite Church (Weaverland Conference). Elizabeth dearly loved her family and enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren. Elizabeth, a homemaker, and her beloved husband were dairy farmers. She volunteered with Meals On Wheels, delivering meals and was also involved in her church sewing circle. She and her husband served together on several service projects with Mennonite Disaster Service and other ministries. In her free time, she enjoyed flower gardens, bird watching and quilting. |
