Joyce Mildred Sprout, 75, of Quarryville, entered into rest on Saturday, October 29, 2016. Born in East Nottingham, she was the daughter of the late Roger Ross and Frances (Herr) England. Joyce worked as a waitress, starting at the former Rhoades Spanish Tavern and retiring from Willow Valley. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Quarryville. Joyce enjoyed baking, reading and cross stitch. She is survived by daughters: Jeannette Harnish of Lancaster; Joanne Gerrity of Hunlock Creek; Jessica Hassel of Quarryville and a son, James C. Sprout, II of Quarryville, along with eight grandchildren and two great granddaughters. Also surviving are siblings; Ernest England of Oxford, Roger R. England, Jr of Nottingham, Margaret Quillen of Paradise and Barbara Claflin of Pottstown. Nancy L. Barton, 70, of Beaver Valley Pike, New Providence, PA died Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Graham and the late Mary Jane Boyd Kuhns, and the loving step daughter of the late Lester F. Kuhns. She and her husband, Jerry R. Barton, Sr. celebrated 54 years of marriage on May 5, 2016. Nancy was retired from the Jay Group where she was employed as a packer. She was an avid animal lover, a real “PETA” person, especially with her dachshunds “wiener” dogs. She enjoyed going to Delaware Park, but mostly she enjoyed her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Todd Allen Best, 46, of Hilldale Road, Holtwood, PA died unexpectedly on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at Lancaster General Hospital as a result of a work related accident that occurred in August. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Robert C. and Leslie Campbell Best of Quarryville. Todd had been employed as a laborer for Risser Grain, LLC in Holtwood. He also worked on the track crew for Buck Motorsports for 27 years. A graduate of Penn Manor High School, class of 1989, he enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, and most of all spending time with his children, grandson, and family. He was a member of Mt Nebo Sportsman’s Association. Virginia (Jennie) L. Sapp, 66, of Oxford, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, October 27, 2016 at Lakeside at Willow Valley, Lancaster. She was the wife of Kenneth S. Sapp with whom she shared 48 years of marriage. Born in Gettysburg, PA she was the daughter of the late James P. and Mildred Price Slauch. Jennie was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, New Providence. She was a graduate of Oxford Area High School class of 1968. Jennie enjoyed gardening, cooking and her grandchildren and family. We were honored to call this amazingly strong, selfless, beautiful, most loving person mom. She endured a battle with MS and cancer with dignity, perseverance and never complained. With a smile on her face…she made this world a better place. John L. Hodgden, III, 64, of Lancaster, was called home unexpectedly to his Lord on Saturday, October 22, 2016. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Hazel (Hodgden) Jones and the late John Hodgden. John worked as a prison guard at Lancaster County Prison. He enjoyed participating in and watching sports, playing cards, and spending time with his family. He had a strong Christian faith. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter, Tonya, wife of Jay Wanger, along with granddaughters, Peyton and Avery of Millersville. He also had 6 siblings; Sharon Campbell of Peach Bottom; Larry of Nottingham; Rick of Lancaster; Randy (Krista) of Lancaster; Toni Mayberry of Elkton and Terri Herr (Bob) of Willow Street. Mary Jane Kuhns, 87, of Lancaster PA, formerly of New Providence, PA passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2016. She was the widow of the late Ernest Graham who passed away in 1948 and the late Lester F. Kuhns who passed away in 1966. Mary had preceded her sister, Helen Waltman, in death by 24 hours. Born in Nickel Mines PA, a daughter of the late Jerry and Myrtle Stauffer Boyd. Mary’s cat was very important to her. Helen I. Waltman, 77, of Paradise PA, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2016. She was the widow of Carl R. Waltman who passed away in 2008. Helen had passed away 24 hours following the death of her sister, Mary Kuhns. Born in Nickel Mine PA, a daughter of the late Jerry and Myrtle Stauffer Boyd. Timothy A. Vest, 37, of Peach Bottom, entered into rest on October 23, 2016 under Hospice care. Born in Peach Bottom, he was the son of Barbara A. (Rice) Vest and the late Robert A. Vest. Tim enjoyed working on cars and spending time with his children. Lois C. Shugar, of New Providence, PA, formerly of Levittown, PA passed away on October 24, 2016.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, she was the daughter of the late Oliver and Ruth Bond. She is survived by 2 daughters, Ruth C. (Brian) Faust, Tuckerton, PA, and Janet L. (Gregrory) Gato, Big Pine Key, FL. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, William C. Shugar and a daughter, Deborah. Dariel Smith, 80, of Holtwood PA, passed away at home on Friday, October 21, 2016. He was the husband of Mary Jane Rineer Smith. They had celebrated 46 years of marriage. Dariel was born in KY, a son of the late Daniel B. and Nannie May Huddle Smith. He had served in the US Army, and had retired as a supervisor with Bechtel Construction. |
