Calvin D. Keene of Bart Township died at Lancaster General Hospital on Thursday, August 20, 2015, following a brief illness. He was 76. Mr. Keene was born in Bart Township, a son of the late Roy C. and Frances Beyer Keene. He graduated from Solanco High School. Mr. Keene worked on the family farm. He was named the Outstanding Cooperator for the Lancaster County Conservation District in 2004. He also earned the Century Farm Award for keeping the farm in his family for more than 100 years. He was named the Southern Lancaster County Republican of the Year in 2015. Mr. Keene served Bart Township for 27 years, working on the Bart Township Planning Commission, the township's zoning hearing board, and the township's board of supervisors. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the township's board of supervisors.
A lifelong member of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, he served as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent, chairman of the board of trustees, the cemetery superintendent, and as a member of the missions committee. He enjoyed woodworking, spending time with family and friends, and his dog, Tootsie. Mr. Keene is survived by his wife of 43 years, Valeria Johns Keene; three children, Harold, husband of Connie DeLong Keene of Quarryville, Willis, husband of Anna Oakes Keene of Rising Sun, Md., and Rebecca, wife of Travis Alewine of Christiana; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three siblings, Richard C., husband of Kathleen Whitelock Keene of Christiana, Thomas H., husband of Jane Fleming Keene of Athens, Ga., and Mary Kathryn, wife of Larry Crom of Espyville. A grandson, Stephen William James Keene, is deceased. Friends may call at the Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Rd., Quarryville, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, August 24. Services will be held from the church at 11 a.m. on Monday with the Rev. Douglas Hileman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
