George R. Aukamp, 97, of Willow Street, PA, passed away on February 5, 2024, surrounded by family. He was the loving husband of Betty A. (Souders) Aukamp, with whom he shared 68 years together before her passing in 2015. George was born to Robert N. and Esther M. (Eckman) Aukamp on February 20, 1926, in New Providence, Lancaster County. He graduated from Quarryville High School, Quarryville, PA, in 1943. George proudly served in the United States Marine Corps 4th Marine Division, 23rd Marines, A Company during World War II. George was trained as a Flame Thrower Operator and fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was seriously injured in the battle and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Asiatic Pacific Operation, and Good Conduct medals for his actions. He returned to Lancaster County after his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps where he was a self-employed painter for 6 years. He went to work at Pennsylvania Power & Light (PP&L) in 1952 and worked there for 34 years before retiring as a Land Manager in 1986. George was a member of the Smithville Church of God since 1954 and served as Elder and Deacon. He also served as Cemetery Sexton for over 56 years. George enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his family and friends.
George is survived by his sister, Carolyn R. Scheuing, his son, Gary Aukamp (husband of Jean), and his daughter, Nadine Graver (wife of Barry, deceased). He is also survived by five grandchildren, Curtis L. Aukamp (Vicki), Vincent J. Aukamp, Heather L. Graver, Heidi L. Pabon (Anthony), Barry W. Graver, Jr., and eight great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Quentin R. Aukamp. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 12, 2024, at Dewald Funeral & Cremation Services, 227 West 4th Street, Quarryville, PA 17566, with Pastor Bo Frey officiating. A viewing will be held at the funeral home prior to the service from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Interment will follow the service at the Smithville Church of God Cemetery with full Military Honors.
