Lawrence (Larry) L. Jackson, 73, of Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, passed away unexpectedly while on a 2-week fishing and rafting trip on the Goodnews River, Alaska, his 10th such adventure to wild Alaska. He was born in Camden, New Jersey to the late David B. and Nadine G. Jackson of Quarryville, PA. He is survived by his wife Jane I. Earle, his brother Richard H. Jackson and wife Joanne, and several cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved great aunt Ruby A. Hanson and grandmother Lelia H. Guiles, whom he will be buried alongside. Larry graduated from Solanco High School, Elizabethtown College, and attended Millersville University. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War, working as a clerk at the Pentagon. He was an area fisheries manager in the southcentral region for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, retiring in 2004 after 30 years of service. He had previously worked for the consultants Ichthyological Associates in Drumore PA, where he met his wife, who had moved from Philadelphia to work as a biologist at the firm. Larry grew up in rural southern Lancaster County, enjoying all the outdoors had to offer and instilling in him a true sense of adventure. He played and hunted in nearby fields, and fished and swam in the West Branch Octoraro Creek. More recently, Larry loved kayaking and fishing on the Susquehanna River and Conodoguinet Creek. Larry and Jane enjoyed watching deer, wild turkey, turtles, and other animals and birds among the trees and wildflowers in their yard; and walking and bicycling in local parks. They loved to travel. They spent week-long winter vacations visiting Florida and Texas, and later, several Turks and Caicos and Bahamas out islands in Larry's pursuit of the elusive bonefish, bird watching and relaxing. More recently, they traveled on small boat cruises to the Columbia River, Mexico's Sea of Cortex, and Panama and Costa Rica. Larry accompanied Jane to several scientific conferences in the western US, vacationing afterwards at nearby scenic areas and national parks. Larry and Jane shared their house with several cats; having over the past 25 years adopted, or been adopted by, twelve feral, stray and wild bam cats and kittens, which they tamed into loving, devoted house and lap cats. Larry could often be seen on the sofa or chair with 3 or 4 cats lying on top of him. Two loyal boys remain.
