Jay F. Newswanger, 86, of Lancaster, formerly Drumore, entered into rest under hospice care on Monday, March 12, 2018. Born in Holtwood, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Ethel M. (Farmer) Newswanger. His wife, Sara “Sally” Newswanger, died in 2017. After graduating from Penn Manor High School, Jay went into the U.S. Air Force and served his country during the Korean Conflict. Jay worked for the D.E.R. at Susquehannock State Park, where he retired in 1994. Jay also worked part-time for the PA Fish Commission. He was a member of the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge, where he was lovingly known as “The Great One”. Jay was a member of the Tucquan Club, the VFW, and served as past treasurer of the Quarryville American Legion, Post #603. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Orioles. Jay was one of those men who would always greet you with that captivating smile. He will be sorely missed, but greatly remembered. He is survived by 3 children: Gary, husband of Melissa and Greg Newswanger, and a daughter, Jaye, wife of Dain Carson. Also surviving are; 4 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Newswanger and a sister, Dorothy Snead. There will be a public viewing on Monday, March 19, 2018 from 6:30 until 8:30 at Dewald Funeral & Cremation Services, 227 W. 4th St., Quarryville, PA. Funeral services and interment in Bethesda United Methodist Cemetery will be private.
