Hazel H. Graham, 91, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, December 9, 2016 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. Born on April 23, 1925 in Smyth County., VA, she was the daughter of the late George and Carrie (Combs) Howell. Hazel was a member of Baptist View Church, Forrest Hill, MD. Hazel was an industrious, hard worker and loved reading, gardening, and walking. When she was young, she really enjoyed roller skating at Rocky Springs. She also enjoyed writing poetry, including writing a class poem for her high school graduating class. Two stories she wrote appeared in “I know a Story” in the Lancaster Sunday News. She collected dolls. For several years she enjoyed holding a huge yard sale over Labor Day weekend. Her family was very important to her. Her bright, beautiful smile was once described as “when Hazel smiles her eyes twinkle.” Hazel retired from QPRC in 1987 after 19 years of service. During WWII she worked at Armstrong Cork Company in the Army shell section. Over the succeeding years she was employed at Penn Dairies, Jane Louise Candy, Miesse Candies, Hubley Toy, Tidy Sewing Factory and Buffalo Molded Plastics. She is survived by a son, Ray Graham of Quarryville, a step-daughter, Lynn Walton of New Providence, a step-son, George Herr, Jr of Quarryville; 3 sisters, Dorothy, wife of Norman Duvall, Peach Bottom, Helen Shenk and Shirley Shenberger, both of Lancaster; 7 grandchildren: Michelle Shipp, Mickey Weicksel, Melaine Keath, Melissa Weicksel, Mandriea Cowart, Megan Rashidov, and Jeremy Graham, 19 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband John Graham (1986) and her second husband George B. Herr (2002), a daughter, Avis Danz, a step-son James Herr and a step daughter Cora May Angeline, along with three brothers, Lillard, Lawrence and Eugene Howell. The public is invited to Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren Cemetery, 1392 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, PA for a traditional graveside interment on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Barbara McCardell officiating.
