George G. Omerly, III, 91, of Quarryville, entered his Heavenly home on Friday, October 8, 2021 at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. He was the beloved husband of Audrey M. (Palmer) Omerly, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late George G. and Catharine (Riggs) Omerly, II. George graduated high school in California. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. George went on to attend college and earn a bachelor’s degree in business, attend seminary to earn a master’s degree, and through much diligent work he earned a doctorate degree in Old Testament Hebrew. George was an ordained minister, serving as a missionary to spread the gospel to the indigenous Inca Indian people in Peru. Gifted in linguistics, George learned the Quechua language to help him communicate with those in the mountains of Peru. He served with Wycliffe Bible Translators to translate the New Testament into Quechua, which was the first time these people had the Bible in their own language. Audrey also ministered in Peru and often used her nursing skill in her missionary work, giving George the opportunity to share the gospel with those she served. George was a great husband and father and he was very involved in his church and with his family. God always came first in his life.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Margaret E. Felton and husband Dennis P., of Tallahassee, FL; a son, George Calvin Omerly and wife Dana, of Colorado; grandchildren, Layla Nicole Watson, Jessica Leanne Watson, Christian Gregory Watson, and Eric Asa Felton; and great-grandchildren, Eric Mason Bishop, Audrey Delilah Brown, William Bishop, and Kylie Bishop. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 4 sisters. Services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in George’s memory to the Kinsman Fund of Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, PA 17566 (please make checks payable to “QPRC” and write “Kinsman Fund” on the memo line).
