Frances J. "Fran" Smith, 74, of New Providence died Sunday, May 9 at Lancaster General Hospital5/13/2021
She was the beloved wife of Roland F. Smith, Jr., with whom she shared 50 years of marriage. Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth Elliott Metzger and the late Bernadette Alexine Hutton. Fran was a graduate of Southern High School in South Baltimore, class of 1964. Over the years she worked at a bank and a dentist office, but the majority of her employment was as a school bus driver, first in Baltimore County, and most recently for Shultz Transportation in Willow Street. Fran had a love for children. It was hard to separate her from a newborn. She and Roland served as foster parents and over the years they helped raise 26 foster children. Fran was a devout Christian. Her love of the Lord was #1 in her life. She was a member of Wrightsdale Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher and regularly volunteering for children’s activities. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Roland M. Smith, of New Providence; daughter, Lisa Hurd and husband Pastor Bob Hurd, of Butler, PA; grandchildren, Emily Smith-Carter, Rebecca Smith, Roland William Smith, Rob Smith, and David Smith; great-grandchildren, IvaLeigh, Wesley, Howie, Robert Luke, Brayden, and Ashton; brothers, Jim Metzger and wife Kathy, of Harford County, MD, Bill Metzger, of Edgewood, MD, and Shirley Martin, of Quarryville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Rudy Metzger, and a sister, Ann Whittle.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at Wrightsdale Baptist Church, 310 Little Britain Road South, Peach Bottom, PA 17563. Interment will be private in Holly Hill Memorial Gardens in Baltimore. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Fran’s memory to Wrightsdale Baptist Church at the above address, and designate “Children’s Ministry” on the memo line.
