Claude F. Hart of Quarryville died at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community on Wednesday, December 30, 2015. He was 101. Mr. Hart was born August 28, 1914, a son of the late Charles Chester and Alice Fiechtner Hart. He graduated from Quarryville High School in 1932. As a teenager, he spent the week of the Farm Show in Harrisburg, cleaning and bedding the livestock exhibits. Mr. Hart was a lifelong crop farmer who also specialized in beef and hog production. Early in his career, he supplemented his income during the winter by working for the U.S. Postal Service and later as an employee of Stoner Ink Co. After the sale of his home farm, he worked for the late Aaron Glick, Jim Kreider, and the late Sam and Allen Kreider. He also maintained an orchard, a vegetable garden, and a rose garden. Mr. Hart picked apples until the age of 95 and delivered apple cider to his Amish and English neighbors for years. He was active in his churches, most recently the Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, where he taught adult Sunday School. Prior to that, he attended Mt. Hope United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and served on the church board for several terms. Mr. Hart and his wife delivered Meals on Wheels in the Southern End. He also helped at the Solanco Fair during the sweet corn harvest. Active in East Drumore, he served as the township's zoning officer for many years. Mr. Hart is survived by two sons, Jay C. "Bud", husband of Kathleen E. Pennypacker Hart of Quarryville, and Thomas Lee Hart of Ebensburg; his daughter, Barbara Ann, wife of Douglas Shiffler of Quarryville; and his sister, H. Catherine Hoffer of Lititz.
His wife, Mary E. Deiter Hart, died in 2012. A son, Larry Eugene "Pete" Hart, died while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Friends called at the Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, 1295 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, January 4. Services were held from the church at 11 a.m. on that date with the Rev. James Rhen officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Hope Methodist Cemetery.
