Ann Eckenroth Nelson of Oxford, 88 passed away on Monday June 27, 2022, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Lawrence F. Nelson with whom she shared 56 years of marriage. Born in Birdsboro, PA she was the daughter of the late Howard L. and Olivia H. Eckenroth. Ann graduated from Dickenson College. Ann served the Oxford Area School District as an English teacher, yearbook advisor and drama club leader for 32 years. She was instrumental in sharing her passion for the fine arts through directing the high school plays during her tenure. A 60 year a member of the Oxford Presbyterian Church, Ann served as an Elder and on numerous committees. Glen D. Sellers, age 62, of Denver, PA, formerly of Pequea, passed away at his home on Sunday, July 3, 2022. He was the husband of Claudia McKelvey Sellers, with whom he would have celebrated 26 years of marriage on August 3rd. He was born in Lancaster, son of Frank Sellers of Pequea and the late Jeanette Crouthamel Sellers. Glen graduated from Penn Manor High School, Class of '78. He was a life long member of Mt. Nebo UMC and was also on the church softball league. Glen worked for PPL - Brookfield Power Company as a Journeyman Electrician and Operator of the Holtwood Power Plant, retiring in 2020 after 41 years. Verna Mae Walton, 92, of Kirkwood, went home to be with Jesus on Friday, July 1, 2022 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Elvin G., Sr. and Nora H. (Boyer) Mellinger. She was the loving wife of the late Kenneth K. Walton for 48 years at the time of his passing. Verna Mae was a life-long member of Union Church, and also worshiped at Wesley Church for the last 25 years. She was actively involved in her churches and community in many ways, serving in various roles. She was a devoted homemaker who enjoyed sharing her gift of hospitality with all who came into her home. Verna Mae loved nature, flowers, family, friends and caring for children. Dorothy B. “Dottie” Wert, 92, of Quarryville, died on Sunday, July 3, 2022 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. Born in Centre Hall, PA, she was the daughter of the late C. William Boozer, Sr., and Lena (Emerick) Boozer. She was married to Dean E. Wert, Sr. for 69 years at the time of his passing in 2019. Dottie graduated from Centre Hall-Potter High School in 1948, where she was active in band and chorus. She was employed in the factory and accounting department at Stoner Incorporated for 45 years. Dottie was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church, where she played in the bell choir, sang in the senior choir, and was choir librarian for many years. She served as director of Solanco Meals on Wheels for 6 years and was also a driver. She was a Red Cross volunteer at Lancaster General Hospital for 9 years. Donald R. “Don” Sample, 90, formerly of Quarryville, passed away on Friday, July 1, 2022 at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the beloved husband of Barbara R. (Reese) Sample, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage. Born in New Providence, he was the son of the late William Sample and Ada (Lefever) McVey. Don was a graduate of the Southern Lancaster County Joint High School, class of 1949. He then found employment with Ford New Holland, working in the manufacturing production planning department, and retired in 1991 with 40 years of service. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. Barry L. Buffenmyer, age 82 of Lancaster, passed away on Friday, July 1, 2022 at his home surrounded by family. He was the husband of Peggy Miller Buffenmyer with whom he celebrated 57 years of marriage in October. Born in Brownstown, he was the son of the late Mark and Ruth Landis Buffenmyer. Barry and Peggy attended Grace Church at Willow Valley. He worked for Lapp Electric for over 30 years. Barry honorably served his country in the United States Navy. In his free time, he loved hunting, fishing, boating, woodworking, and doing wood carvings. Barry handled everything with such dignity, and no matter how hard things got he never complained. He was a man with a very deep faith, and he was ready to go to heaven. Jay M. Groff, 91, a resident of Landis Homes, formerly of Bird –In-Hand, passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2022. Born in Bird-In-Hand on May 8, 1931, he was the son of the late Martin R. and Edna M. Groff. He was the husband of the late Doris E. Landis Groff for 67 years, who predeceased him on April 19, 2022. He is survived by 2 children, Patricia (Randall) Ranck of Lancaster, PA, J. Kenneth (Tracy) Groff of Mt. Joy, PA; 2 grandchildren, Adam (Megan) Ranck and Kristie Ranck; 3 great granddaughters, Meredith, Amelia and Laurel Ranck; and sister-in-law Delores Landis. He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene (John B.) Noll. Evelyn R. Handel, age 86, formerly of Holtwood, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at the Newport Meadows Nursing Center. She was the wife of the late Fred C. Handel. Born in Marion, VA, she was the daughter of the late James V. and Anna Ruth Gore Hash. She was a member of St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church in Quarryville. Surviving are 4 children: Doyle S. (Debra) Welk of FL, Darrell A. (Nancy) Welk of New Providence, John E. (Kerry) Handel of Millersville, Catherine F. (Tom) Hughes of New Holland, 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, and 2 sisters: Janet Martin formerly of Mt. Joy, and Joyce (Harry) Martin of Peach Bottom. |
