Chad Aaron McDowell, 50, of Quarryville, entered into rest on Sunday, March 5, 2023, while at home, surrounded by his family. Born in Altoona, he was the son of Sharon (Smith) McDowell, companion of John Dorefice and the late James McDowell. Chad graduated from Altoona High School, attended PSU, Altoona and graduated with a B.S. in Elementary Education from Lock Haven University. While at LHU, he played snare drum in the band and met his wife of 25 years, Jennifer (Murphy) McDowell. Chad followed in his father’s footsteps and became a PIAA official at age 18. He was well respected in the Blair County area. He eventually moved to Southern Lancaster County and began officiating and coaching basketball in 1999, starting in the youth league with a travel team and working his way up to head coach at Solanco High School. Chad worked with both the boys’ and girls’ teams at Solanco. He took the girls to the PA State tournament twice within his first 5 years. He led the girls to win two section titles. Chad also coached youth soccer for several years and the Solanco JV softball team for 16 years. Peggy A. Reedy, age 67 of New Providence, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at home. She was born in Lancaster, daughter of the late Merle and Mildred Carter Reedy. Peggy was a 50 year member of Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Solanco High School class of 1973. She liked to crochet, cook, watch black and white t.v. shows and movies, but most of all she adored her grandchildren . Mary Stotsenburg Allen passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home early Friday morning, February 24, 2023, at the age of 89. Mary was born in New Jersey in 1933, the eldest child of Rev. Charles and Margaret Stotsenburg. Mary married Oscar Allen in 1964, after he proposed in the Great Smoky Mountains, NC. They spent over 40 years living in Paoli, PA before moving to Oxford, PA to be closer to their son and his family. After graduating from Eastern Baptist College Mary had a lifelong career devoted to the church, specializing in Christian education. Most of her years in ministry were spent at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Wayne, PA and Westminster Presbyterian Church in West Chester, PA. Mary’s talents were many, but she had a deep love of music and was a gifted singer and piano player. Mildred M. Mildred M. “Mitzi” McDade, 92 of the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 3, 2023. Born in Trenton, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Louis C. and Augusta E. (Schmidt) Milacci. She was the loving wife of the late James J. McDade, Sr. who passed on January 10, 2013. Mitzi was a homemaker, long-time piano instructor, and pianist at Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Levittown (PCA). Kathleen E. Harnish, 86, formerly of Quarryville, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at Newport Meadows Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was the loving wife of the late Martin K Harnish, Jr., with whom she shared 52 years of marriage at the time of his passing in 2008. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Earl R. and Mary C. (Judith) Adams. Kathleen grew up in Lancaster and attended J.P. McCaskey High School. After high school, she married Martin and became a resident of Quarryville, living there for over 60 years. Kathleen loved her family deeply and lived her life as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Ross David Eckman, of Peach Bottom, Pa passed away suddenly on February 17, 2023. He was born on March 31, 1957, to the late Ross Ellison Eckman & Stella Margaret Eckman (Miller). Ross was employed at Cox’s garage for 44 years as a mechanic. In 2001, he became the owner operator of Eckman’s Tire Service and traveled throughout the tri-state area repairing a plethora of tires for a large array of people with both of his sons. Ross was a hard worker and would lend you the shirt off his back. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid motorcyclist. One of his favorite past times was tractor pulling. There, he could show off his love of antique farm equipment. Tractor pulls were a family affair and will not be the same without him to give his sage advice or fix things in a pinch. Luckily, he passed on his love of antique tractors to his children and grandchildren. Ida Jane Kauffman, age 98, formerly of Christiana, passed away at Landis Homes on Monday, February 27, 2023. She was the wife of the late Albert L. Kauffman who passed away on January 25, 2006. She was born in Washington Boro, daughter of the late Abram & Ada Henry Duke. In the past she attended Maple Grove Mennonite Church and then Landis Homes Bethany Chapel since August of 2009. In her early years she worked at a sewing factory in Gap. She enjoyed gardening, snowmobiling, sewing, cooking and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. Jonas S. King, age 78, of Gap, PA, passed away at his home on Monday, February 27, 2023. He was the husband of Rachel S. Lapp King, with whom he celebrated 54 years of marriage on September 10th. He was born in New Holland, son of the late John K. & Lavina E. Stoltzfus King. He was an active member of the Honey Brook Community Church, where he had served as deacon and elder. Along with his brother David, he was a former owner of Nickel Mine Floor Covering and then operated a furniture business with his son-in- law, James, until 2012. He enjoyed going to the family cabin in Union County, hunting and traveling. He was known for taking the scenic route, telling dauddy jokes and saying "Keep your eyes peeled for deer". Thomas R. Gillespie, 55, of Nottingham died at Lancaster General Hospital Sunday, February 263/1/2023
Thomas R. Gillespie, age 55 of Nottingham, passed away on February 26, 2023 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was born in Lancaster, son of Linda Chadwick of Nottingham and the late Thomas C. “Chuck” Gillespie. Tom was a proud Veteran of the United States Coast Guard. He was an excellent marksman and enjoyed hunting and collecting firearms. Tom was highly intelligent and very talented. He was a great Creative writer, and also artistic and could draw beautifully with his right or left hand. He also loved 70’s and 80’s music, his Toyota FJ, and his family. Kathryn Ann “Kitty” Greenleaf, a resident of Ware Presbyterian Home, Oxford, passed away peacefully on Thursday February 23, after a brief illness. She was 80 years old. Born Kathryn Ann Dawson on August 8, 1942, she was the daughter of Jack and Vivian Lamborn Dawson. After graduating from Solanco high school, Kitty married J. Scott Greenleaf and they made their home on Liberty Lane in Kirkwood. They were married for 55 years. |
