Steven W. Brackin, of Quarryville, died on Monday, December 23, 2013 at Union Hopsital in Elkton, MD. He was 54. Mr. Brackin was born in Chester County, son of the late Lawrence and Patricia George Brackin. He was the companion of Carol Beam. Mr. Brackin was employed as a farm manager for Warwick Farms, for Phillips Mushroom Farms. He enjoyed world travel, hunting and motorcycle riding. He spent his entire career in the mushroom industry. He traveled the globe regularly seeking the latest innovations in equipment and growing techniques. He was largely responsible for the advanced design and efficiencies of energy, labor and materials achieved at Warwick Mushroom Farms. He was universally respected throughout the industry for his commitment to learning better way to grow, and passing this knowledge on to others. He was Warwick Mushroom Farms representative to the American Mushroom Institute and The Maryland & Cecil County Farm Bureaus. On behalf of these organizations he gave numerous tours to various federal, state and county agencies to help increase their knowledge of mushroom growing.
In addition to his companion, Carol, he is survived by a sister, Vickie Salyers, of Roan Mountain, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Raymond A. Brackin, two brothers, Gary and Ronald Brackin and a sister, Judith Maxfield. Friends can call at the Reynolds Funeral Home, 144 East State Street in Quarryville on Friday, December 27 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday, December 28, at the Wesley United Methodist Church from 10 to 11 a.m. Services will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday with Pastor Blake Deibler officiating.
