Leonard S. “Smokey” Stover, 88, of Quarryville, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his 5 children. He was the loving husband of the late Janet A. (Stone) Stover, sharing 56 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2012. Born in New Holland, he was the son of the late Barton S. and Gertrude L. (Weaver) Stover. Leonard was a highly sought-after and skilled heavy equipment operator, and he was a member of the I.U.O.E. Local 542 for over 60 years. Some of the projects he worked on were the Saint Lawrence Seaway, Muddy Run, and pipelines through Blue Marsh Lake and across the Susquehanna River at Clark’s Ferry. He enjoyed riding motorcycles from a young age. He and Janet logged many miles on his Harley-Davidson, travelling locally and across the country. Leonard had a love for horses and raising Appaloosas, owning many throughout the years. He was always very active on his small farm: raising cattle, planting huge gardens, mowing his cedar patch, and cutting wood – which he did until he was called to his final home. Leonard proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Germany. Leonard is survived by his daughters, Wanda L. Williams, of Quarryville, Kim L. McCauley, of West Virginia, and Cynthia L. (William) Bickel, of Pequea; sons, Philip L. (Sherry) Stover, of Denver, PA, and Christopher S. (Patricia A.) Stover, of Holtwood; brother, Jay (Pat) Stover, of New Holland; and 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, Alfred and Gerald Stover, and sisters, Evelyn Stone, Dorothy Stover, and Lucille Simmons.
