Frederick “Fred” H. Frey, 86, of Quarryville, went to his heavenly home on March 23, 2019 at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy with his family by his side. Born October 15, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Frederick C and Anna Huber Frey. Born to German immigrants, he was the first generation born in the U.S. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 53 years June Hansen Frey, his children, Fritz Frey (Nancy), Frieda Pfender (Matt), Anna Mârie Barley (Harold), Heidi Cunningham (Walt), 9 Grandchildren, 4 Great-grandchildren, and siblings, Anita Barthelson, Adolph “Pete” Frey, Anna Magdalena “Maggie” Luckerath (Hubert), John Frey, and C. William “Willie” Frey (Joan). Fred was preceded in death by siblings Ernst “Ernie” Frey, Siegfried Frey, and Maria Frey. Fred lived a very energetic and fulfilling life with numerous accomplishments. At age 16, following his father’s untimely death, he quit school to support the family and help raise his siblings. Fred managed and grew the family farm. Fabricating his own cattle equipment out of necessity, his unique and innovative equipment designs burgeoned into manufacturing and sales; partnering with brothers Willie and Ernie, they founded Frey Brothers.
An accomplished cattleman, he also earned a pilot’s license, started a construction co., and was a boxer. As a land conservationist, he created many land contour designs & methods used today in modern farming. Firmly engaged in the beef cattle industry, he was a leader, founder, mentor, pioneer, and inventor. Fred imported the first Chianina bull in the U.S. from Italy, invented the blocking chute (among many other things), was the founding father of the “Atlantic National Angus ROV” show, and established the “PA Angus Breeders Show” & “Angus on Parade Sale”. Fred served as President of the PA Angus Association and has received numerous nationally recognized awards for his cattle, manifesting his dedication of improving the “quality of the breed” via genetics, crops, and best practices development. He was also very active and generous in 4-H, FFA, Angus Associations, Cattlemen Associations, R-CALF USA, and served as judge for many cattle shows. Fred was a very giving member of his community, donating time & resources to charitable events and neighbors in need. Most would argue Fred’s Certified Angus Beef BBQ and Prime Rib dinners were second to none. A life-long member of Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren, Fred’s faith was strong and unwavering. Visitations will be held at Mechanic Grove COB (1392 Robert Fulton Hwy., Quarryville) on Friday March 29 from 6 to 8pm, and Saturday March 30 from 9:30 to 11am. A Celebration of life and interment will follow Saturday at 11am. Friends and family are invited to join for lunch and reflection after services. In Lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Mechanic Grove COB Benevolence Fund; Solanco Fair Association PO Box 4 Quarryville, PA 12566; or Hospice & Community Care PO Box 4125 685 Good Drive Lancaster Pa 17604.
