Ethel A. Van Natta of New Providence died at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community on Wednesday, December 11, 2013. She was 93. Mrs. Van Natta was a daughter of Ai and Grace McCullough Rorabaugh. She graduated from Millersville Teachers College in 1942 and taught grade school throughout Lancaster County, starting at a one-room school at Mt. Airy. Mrs. Van Natta continued teaching after she moved to San Diego, Calif., during World War II. She moved back to New Providence in 1948 and resumed her teaching career at Strasburg Elementary School.
After retiring, she became active with a number of community organizations, including the Rawlinsville and Refton fire companies, the Grange, Providence Township Ambulance Association, the American Cancer Society, Meals on Wheels, Landis Valley Farm Museum's Harvest Days, and the Farmland Trust. She also taught Sunday School. Mrs. Van Natta enjoyed writing poems. She is survived by three sons, Lemuel Van Natta, Virgil Van Natta, and William Van Natta; three granddaughters; and one grandson Her husband, Virgil H. Van Natta, died in 1991. Her twin, Ai Rorabaugh Jr., Russell, Dora, and John are deceased. Friends may call at Dewald Funeral and Cremation Services, 227 W. Fourth St., Quarryville, from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 15. Services will be held from the funeral home at 2 p.m. on that date with Pastor Ron Rush officiating. Private burial will be in New Providence Mennonite Cemetery. Comments are closed.
