Ellis David Kreider, 90, of East Drumore Twp., passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness. He was born on November 8, 1926 in East Lampeter Township and was the son of the late David and Bessie (Peifer) Kreider. Ellis devoted his life to his family, farming and service to his church. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years, Amy (Groff) and three sons: Carl D. (Marylin Ott) of Quarryville; Wayne E. (Carla Kirkaldie) of Quarryville and Bruce G. ( Beverly Stoltzfus) of Marietta. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Jonathan Kreider, David Kreider and Anna Kreider all of Quarryville; Andrew Kreider (Sarah Rathbun) of Camp Hill and Kyle Kreider of Pittsburgh. Ellis was preceded in death by 3 siblings: Harry Kreider, Elsie Ulrich and Grace Delong. He served as deacon and minister at Mechanic Grove Mennonite Church for over 20 years, and was a Sunday school teacher for practically his entire adult life. His insights and passion for scripture will be missed. He loved to read and passed that love to his family.
As a dairy farmer, Ellis loved his work and was active on the farm until very shortly before his death. He was a skilled mechanic and modified or fabricated several pieces of farm machinery, particularly for the hay business he and son Carl operated. He was a jack of all trades and there was often a construction project on the farm, designed and carried out by Ellis and his family. A service to celebrate Ellis’ life will be held on Monday, May 8, at Mechanic Grove Mennonite Church, 735 Church Rd., Quarryville at 10:00 AM with Pastor Ken Hershey officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. There will be a viewing at the church on Sunday evening from 6-8 PM and also on Monday from 9-10 AM.
