Barbara Joanne Boldt, 86, of Quarryville, entered into rest on Monday, October 20, 2014. The youngest of 3 sisters, she was born in Blairsville, a small town in western PA, a daughter of the late Charles and Katherine (King) Smith. Barbara and her husband, Thomas Boldt had celebrated 65 years of marriage in September. Barbara attended Penn State, earning a degree in Physical Therapy then went on to a graduate program at University of Penn. She and her husband moved to Philadelphia where she worked at Shriners Children Hospital. After 5 years they left the city and bought their 1st home in King of Prussia and started their family. When the youngest child, Dan was 8 years old, Barbara returned to work as a PT at a school for handicapped children in Montgomery Co. Barbara was the first women elected to the Upper Marion School Board. She took an interest in local politics. In 1971 the family moved to Quarryville and bought a 35 acre farm with a house in need of repair. Together they restored the house and land to a beautiful property. Barbara then went to work for Easter Seals and IU13 and Tom opened “Boldt’s Antiques” in 1978. She served several years on the East Drumore Zoning Board. In 2005 they downsized moving into the borough of Quarryville.
Both Barbara and her husband were volunteers for Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, Quarryville Library and S.E.C.A. She loved gardening and passed this passion on to all three of her children. She was an avid reader and proponent of life-long learning. She and her husband enjoyed many years of travel within the U.S.; some trips were through Elderhostel, a study/travel group. They took a tour of New England lighthouses while living on a Clipper Ship and also learned to sail. Barbara was always a good friend and neighbor, going out of her way to help others in need with kindness and generosity. Surviving besides her husband are 3 children: Susan, Kay and Dan along with 3 grandchildren and a sister. On Thursday, October 23rd at 10:00 a.m. in the Williamsburg Room at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community there will be a time remembering the life of Barbara Bolt conducted by Rev. Dr Michael Wilson. Friends may greet the family from 9:30 – 10:00. Interment will be private.
