Arne Walter Johnsen of Quarryville died at Lancaster General Hospital on Tuesday, March 11, 2014. He was 88. Mr. Johnsen was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of the late Petter August and Nancy Haabesland Johnsen. During World War II, he served as a Seaman 1st Class aboard the U.S.S. Miami. Following the war, he worked for the telephone company in New York and retired from Siemens in 1989. He was an active member of the 66th Street Evangelical Free Church, Brooklyn, and Cresskill Evangelical Free Church, New Jersey, where he served for many years in the Boys Brigade and as a deacon and an elder.
After moving to the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, he and his wife enjoyed the hymn sing and performing in the choir. He is survived by his children, Ruth Ann Nilsen of Norridgewock, Maine, Walter, husband of Janet Nilsen Johnsen of Cornwall, Holly Lynn, wife of Victor Vaccaro of Bergenfield, N.J., Timothy Allen, husband of Kathie Rupp Johnsen of Lake Placid, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Victoria Nilsen of Toano, Va., Susan Nilsen of Williamsburg, Va., Krysti Nilsen Dabrowski of Little Rock, Ark., Allison Johnsen Cummings of Enid, Okla., and Karin Johnsen Guttzeit of Fairlawn, N.J.; six great-grandchildren; his brother, William Johnsen of River Edge, N.J.; and two sisters, Signe Roberts of Arvado, Colo., and Ruth Tonnesen of Warwick, N.Y. His wife, Ruth Mathisen Johnsen, is deceased. Services were held from the Ellingsworth Auditorium, Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, with Chaplain Stephen L. Phillips officiating. Burial was in the Quarryville Cemetery. Arrangements were made through Reynolds Funeral and Cremation Services, Quarryville. Comments are closed.
