On Friday, November 11, 2022, Benjamin fulfilled his heart’s desire and met his Heavenly Savior. In the process, he was given a new body and restored mind. He was also reunited with long-missed family, including his son, Travis. Benjamin Lee Work was born on September 19, 1953 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Richard and Lois (Spence) Work. Ben’s hometown, which he was proud of, was Quarryville, PA. As a student at Solanco, Ben became a well-known athlete in the community. He started at a young age with a love for baseball, having shared many memories with his father. As a high school athlete, he played football and basketball. He is also a record holder in track. In 2009, Ben was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Solanco. This was a humbling and proud moment for Ben. He also spent his summers as a lifeguard at the Quarryville Pool. Upon graduation from Solanco, Ben attended McPherson College in Kansas. As a young man, Ben became a hard worker, from driving truck to route sales, he made many friends along the way. Snack foods seemed to be what he could sell most. He spent time working for Pepsi, Herr’s, and Frito-Lay. He retired from Utz. Ben was also involved with caring for the rabbits at the Solanco Fair and coaching numerous years of baseball for Solanco Little League. He also enjoyed being part of the chain gang for Varsity football games. Charles S. “Chuck” Pugh, Jr., of Willow Street, passed away at his home on Thursday, November 10, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Carol T. (Topping) Pugh, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. Born in West Grove, he was the son of the late Charles S. Pugh and Flora Margaret (Jones) Cashel. Chuck was a graduate of Oxford Area High School, class of 1961, and he attended the University of Delaware. Early in life he was employed by Atlas Chemical as a chemist. He then went on to be employed by Roadway Express as a truck driver, retiring with 27 years of service. Chuck proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in Korea and Vietnam from 1963 to 1966. Known as the “sticky bun man,” Chuck found great enjoyment in making and delivering sticky buns to family, friends, and those on his delivery route. He was also mechanically inclined and regularly worked on machinery. In his spare time, Chuck enjoyed watching wildlife in his yard. He loved his family and was an excellent husband, father, and grandfather. Betty L. (Mudd) Pyle, age 96, of Chester County, formerly of Blair County, Delaware County, and Lancaster County, passed away on Friday, November 4, 2022 in Oxford, PA. Born May 2, 1926 in Cross Keys, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harvey B. and Catherine B. (Stiffler) Miller. She was a graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, class of 1944. Betty retired from United Airlines in 1988 with 25 years of service, where she was a kitchen lead. Elias R. Groff, 84, formerly of Holtwood, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at Landis Homes Retirement Community. Born in Holtwood on the family farm, he was the son of the late Clayton and Mary (Rohrer) Groff. He was the loving husband of the late Marian (Mohler) Groff for 41 years at the time of her passing. Elias was a lifelong vegetable farmer. He was a member of Life Mennonite Fellowship in West Willow. He enjoyed hunting in his younger years and enjoyed visits with family and friends. E. Yvonne Greenleaf, 85, Kirkwood, passed away in the company of family on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022, at Calvert Manor nursing home in Rising Sun, Maryland. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Erma Shoff Cramer. She was a 1955 graduate of Solanco High School and was the wife of the late Edgar F. Greenleaf, to whom she was married for 59 years. She enjoyed gardening, antiquing, going to auctions, animals and her pets and, recently, playing bingo and doing crosswords at Calvert Manor. Gottlieb Strohmaier, 92, of Oxford, PA, passed away Monday, November 7, 2022, at his home with his family. He was the loving husband of Marie DiEmedio Strohmaier with whom he shared 68 years of marriage. Born in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late Gottlieb Johann and Anna Marie Eisenmann Strohmaier. He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1948. He was a veteran of the US Army and Reserves for six years. Gottlieb (Lieb) farmed all of his life, initially in Glasgow, DE, moving to Oxford, PA in 1958. He was a former member of St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Unionville, PA and presently a member of Community of Love Lutheran Church, Oxford, PA. Lieb liked following boxing, baseball and football. He enjoyed spending time with his canine companions, took pride in his farming career, and thoroughly loved his Italian wife’s cooking. Mary E. Breneman, age 101, of Luther Acres, formally of New Providence, passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. She was the wife of the late Paul H. Breneman who passed in 1985. She was born on July 5, 1921 in New Providence daughter to the late John D. and Emma Mary Brubaker Mowery. She retired from RCA in 1983 after 23 years of service. Mary loved Bingo. She was an avid Pinochle player and continued that until the last years of her life. She enjoyed riding on the Harley Davidson motorcycle with her husband. She is survived by a son, William E. Breneman of Lancaster. Joyce Ann McMullen, 73, of Nottingham, PA, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at her home. Born on May 22, 1949, in Coatesville, PA she was the daughter of the late James, Sr. and Grace Darone Leonard. Joyce was dedicated to her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She is survived by two sons, Edwin McMullen, Jr. (Sharyn) and Robert McMullen; one grandson, Ethan McMullen; and ten siblings, James Leonard (Marie), David Leonard, Patricia Pluta, George Leonard (Linda), Robert Leonard (Sue), Pam Leonard, Deb Chesnet (Bill), Gene Leonard (Kathy), Linda Todd (Norman) and Barb Leonard. She was preceded in death by three siblings, Gary Leonard, Shirley Krauss and Dean Leonard. Sharri L. Cunningham, 82, formerly of Quarryville, entered into rest on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at the Gardens at Stevens Nursing Center. Born In Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Verna (Cramer) Herr. She was married to the late Kenneth Cunningham who passed on April 4, 2003. Sharri was a graduate of Penn Manor High School. She grew up in Mt. Nebo and spent most of her life living in Quarryville. She worked for Kerr Glass and retired from Penn Supreme Ice Cream. Sharri enjoyed camping locally with her late husband. She was known to enjoy the simple things in life like reading, collecting cookie jars, and animals. Thomas Eugene Icenhour, 59, went to be with the Lord Monday, October 31, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. Born in West Chester, PA he was the son of Helena Barker Icenhour of Nottingham and the late James Icenhour. Tom enjoyed fishing and working on cars. He is survived by his mother; one daughter, Maggie; two granddaughters, Alice and Angel; one brother, Tim Icenhour of Nottingham; three nephews, Tim, Chad and Christian; two special aunts, Beverly and Lue; and one special uncle, Edwin. Funeral service will be held 11 am Monday, Nov. 7, 2022 at the Edward L. Collins, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., 86 Pine St., Oxford, where friends and family may visit from 10 – 11 am. |
