John R. Hoffman, 83, of Midway Farms Lane, Lancaster, PA passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Newport Meadows, Christiana, PA. He was the husband of Susan E. Rankin Hoffman. Born in York, PA he was the son of the late John Henry and Mabel Elizabeth Barnes Hoffman. John retired from the former New Holland Machine Company where he was employed as a sales analyst. He served his country proudly in the US Navy on the USS Pollack during the Vietnam War. Along with his service he was a member of the American Legion Post #34 and the Fleet Reserve Association. John volunteered as an EMT for 30 years with several ambulance associations. He also volunteered with the Red Cross Disaster Services and assisted in setting up the evacuation plan for TMI. In retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling in their 40’ motor home for 8 years. John E. “Jack” Steele, 95, of Oxford, PA passed away peacefully on Friday, October 6, 2023 at his home. He was the husband of the late Violet E. McDowell Steele with whom he shared 74 years of marriage. Born on November 17, 1927 to the late Horace M. and E. Marian Steele. Jack grew up on a farm where he learned the value of hard work. He graduated from Oxford High School class of 1947, and in November of that year married his high school sweetheart, Violet McDowell. They lived in the house that he built for 75 years. Jack was previously employed with The Oxford Cabinet Company until he decided he would rather be a mechanic than a cabinet painter, and went to work for S.G. Lewis and Sons, until his retirement. He fixed many local farmers equipment, and became well known as the man who could fix anything. Francois Noel “Skip” Weigel, 83, of Cochranville, PA, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023 at Chester County Hospital, West Chester.
He was the husband of Linda Newton Weigel with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. Born in Elkton, MD, he was the son of the late Amos and Frances Press Weigel. Skip was a veteran of the US Army. He was employed as a manager for Acme Markets and after retirement he was employed with Robinson’s Furniture, Oxford and managed Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, Quarryville. Skip was a scuba diver with the Chester County Rescue Squad and was a member of the American Legion Mason Dixon Post #194, Rising Sun, MD and the Horseshoe Hall of Fame, VA. Helen Elizabeth Baldwin, 87, of Nottingham, PA, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023 at home. Born in Oxford she was the daughter of the late John P., Sr. and Edna Aberts Shoemaker. Helen enjoyed crafts, teddy bears, animals and especially her grandchildren. She is survived by one son, Robert R. Slayman of Nottingham; two daughters, Helen Sheckler of VA and Jeaneen Graham (Brien) of Christiana, PA; five grandchildren, Angie Slayman, Amanda Kerns, Tiffany Sawyer, Amber Rhoderick (Andy) and Emmalynn Graham; six great-grandchildren, Megan Slayman, Madeline Kerns, Nick Sawyer, Kimberly Sawyer, Alexzander Rhoderick and Austin Rhoderick; and one sister, Jeanette Sherrick of NC. Essie V. Snyder, 60, of Oxford, PA, passed away on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia. She was the wife of Robert “Bob” H. Snyder with whom she shared 25 years of marriage. Born in West Grove, PA she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Laura Keys Roark. She is survived by her husband; three children, Nikkole Puckett of Christiana, PA, Bobbie Snyder of Oxford and Monica Valvo of North East, MD; three grandchildren, Kevin Puckett, Cody Puckett and Iris Mays; three sisters, Connie McMillan of West Grove, Elsie Donnelly of Honey Grove, PA and Hope Rumford of Ephrata; and four brothers, Ernest Roark of Laurel, TN, Kenneth Roark of Crystal Beach, MD, John Roark of Ephrata and Michael Roark of DE. Vanessa R. Appel, 69, formerly of Drumore, passed away at Newport Meadows Health and Rehabilitation on Thursday, October 5, 2023.
She was the loving wife of the late David E. Appel, sharing 29 years of marriage at the time of his passing in 2022. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late John F. and Mary E. (Reidenbach) Kelley. Vanessa was a graduate of Pequea Valley High School, class of 1972. Following high school, she worked for several hotels and motels in housekeeping and laundry, served as the housekeeping supervisor at Hershey Farms Inn, and worked for the Amish Barn Restaurant. In her spare time, Vanessa enjoyed playing bingo and going to the casino to play slot machines. She especially enjoyed relaxing in front of a fire and having gatherings with her family. Donald U. Burkhart, 88 of Whitefield Lane, Lancaster, PA passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023 at his residence. Born in Strasburg Township, he was the son of the late Clayton B. and Miriam Ulrich Burkhart. Don was employed in the excavating business from the time he was 17 years of age, starting and operating his own business. During that time he received both National and State awards for his excavating skills. He retired from Wiker Excavating in 2009 after 25 years as an equipment operator. He was a member of PA Land Improvement Contractors Association where he also won awards for his abilities as an excavator. Arlene M. Fisher, 96, of New Providence, entered into rest on Friday, October 6, 2023 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. Born in Providence Twp., she was the daughter of the late Issac R. and Marie E. (Aukamp) Doulin. She was the loving wife of Howard K. “Buck” Fisher for over 78 years. Arlene was an active life-member of Providence Church, where she played piano for over 22 years and also taught Sunday School. She was a member and past Worthy Matron of the Quarryville Chapter O.E.S. #446 and enjoyed quilting, crocheting, music, and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. Blaine Malven Haines, 87, died October 5, 2023, at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, where he had been a resident for the past five years. Born on a rainy March 15, 1936, to the late Malven Day and Vercel Margaret (McNaughton) Haines in Clarion County, Pa., he spent much of his early adult life in the Clarks Mills, Pa., area in Mercer County where he graduated from Hadley High School in 1954 and shortly thereafter joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. While in the Army he married his high school sweetheart Rose Mary Jones in 1955. Ella E. Fulton, 95, of Oxford, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went home to be with her Lord on Friday, September 29, 2023, at Ware Presbyterian Village, Oxford. She was the wife of the late William T. Fulton, Jr. with whom she shared 73 years of marriage. Born in Oxford, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Mary Jamison Melrath. She worked various jobs throughout her life- a food service worker for the Oxford Area School District, babysitting and housekeeping. She enjoyed reading her Bible, cooking, baking, gardening, canning, playing cards, watching the Phillies, her church family and being a mighty prayer warrior. She especially loved playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To cherish her memory, Ella leaves her four children; Joan Baker, Ronald Fulton (Tammy), Sandra Hall (David), and Bethany Freeman (John); she will be missed by 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. |
