It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Anita (Ann) Alessi on July 10th, 2023. A beautiful, resourceful and intelligent woman Ann also had a thriving career starting as a professional telephone operator for Bell Telephone. After she worked for the State of Michigan as did her mother before her. Additionally, Ann worked as a Facility Manager for Siemens ending her career in Marketing for Anthem Health. Ann was an accomplished interior decorator and often was found assisting various family members creating room designs, picking patterns and always the right colors for their walls. As a homemaker Ann was known for her family holidays and endless preparations for company visits. As our wife, mother, stepmother, aunt, grandmother, friend and in-law flys with the angels to Saint Peters Gates we remember her for the loving person she was. Donald E. Willard, age 59 of Holtwood, passed away from cancer on Friday, July 7, 2023 at the home of his sister-in-law. Born in Bartville, he was the son of Robert and Joyce Weaver Willard of Bartville. He worked at Lukens Steel and D.M. Stoltzfus as a heavy equipment operator. In his free time, Donnie loved working on classic cars and riding his Harley. Anyone who knew Donnie knew he was a hard worker and bullheaded to the end. William Ralph Holcomb, age 96, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2023, surrounded by his loving family who cared for him during his short illness. He was the husband of the late Nellie Jeanette Holcomb who died in March 2011 – one day before their 57th wedding anniversary. Ralph was the son of the late Willie Neal and Lelia Cox Holcomb. He was also preceded in death by his son Jeffrey Ralph Holcomb, brothers Grover Holcomb, Luther Holcomb, and sister Ruth Richards. He loved his family. Son Larry R. Holcomb (Roxanne) and daughter Rebecca H. Steele (William). Grandchildren Lesley Spence (Nate), Jessica Steele (Adam Biedekapp), Benjamin Holcomb (Raquel), Abbey Holcomb and Analys Holcomb. His precious great-grandchildren Shaine and Grady Spence along with Arthur and Violet Holcomb. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Mary Ann Holcomb and Peggy Holcomb along with many nieces and nephews. With our deepest regret we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Vanderhoef of Kirkwood, Pa. Born of Elkton, Md on December 3, 1956. She passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at 66 years of age. Her legacy and greatest achievement continues on through her family. Nothing gave her more joy than spending time with those that called her Nana. Bruce and Barb’s remarkable journey started at the ages of 19 & 15 and blossomed into a beautiful marriage of 51 years. They went on to raise five children of their own in addition to nurturing many others in their time of need as the doors were always open to their home. She enjoyed coaching and spectating all of her children’s sports but her all time favorite was when she had the chance to sit in the end of the bleachers to keep scores of the baseball and softball games. Suzanne Sheryl Shatley-Porter, 74, of Lincoln University, PA passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2023 at home. Suzanne was a homemaker and a mother of 5 children with 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Born in Lancaster, PA. She was the daughter of the late David E. I. Eckman and the late Ruth I Eckman She enjoyed watching Hallmark TV, Murder She Wrote, Matlock and Wrestling. She also enjoyed traveling to see her family in Virginia, spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Suzanne is survived by five children, Mont Shatley, Jr. of Lincoln University, PA, Donna P. Shatley of Lincoln University, PA, Edward Shatley of Rural Retreat, VA, Heather Shatley of Rural Retreat, VA, and Allen Shatley of Rural Retreat, VA; eleven grandchildren, Luis Jr., Maritza, Tiffiny, Lance (Samantha), Ira, Ryan, David, Kelly, Ed, Angel, and Michelle; seven great-grandchildren, Vanessa, Eva, Carlos Jr, Christian, Savanna, Julian, and the soon Lance Jr due in August of 2023; and three sisters, Janice Wann and Vickie (Jeff) Maser of Orlando, Fl, and Cindy (Peter) Montejo of Lititz, PA. Clyde E. Shoop, Jr., 62 of Oxford, passed away on Monday, July 3, 2023 at home. Born in West Grove, PA he was the son of the late Clyde E. Shoop Sr. and Catherine M. Podmenick Shoop of Oxford. Clyde enjoyed NASCAR, fishing and hunting in Potter County and Huntington County, PA. He is survived by his mother; two sisters, Iris Megill of New Holland and Barbara Roark of Lewisville; and one brother Allen Shoop of Oxford. Services will be private. Paul R. Shivery, age 86 of Christiana, PA, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023, while surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Barbara L. Skethway Shivery, who passed away on November 1, 1989. He was born in Coatesville, son of N. Clyde & Jennie V. Jackson Shivery. He was a longtime member of Latta Memorial Presbyterian Church, where in the past he served as an Elder. He graduated from the former Christiana High School class of 1955 and Scott High School class of 1956. Paul worked for the former Lukens Steel Company of Coatesville, retiring in 1999 after 43 years. He was a hard worker, often doing odd jobs for elderly neighbors after working his shift at the mill. Gerald Wayne Hassel, 84, of Holtwood entered into rest on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at his home. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Parke G. and Elva L. (Homsher) Hassel. He was the loving husband of Nancy Ann (Young) Hassel for over 49 years. Gerald had served in the United States Army and was a life-long carpenter. He took great pride in building his home in Holtwood in 1974. He enjoyed hunting, playing golf, restoring antiques and taking winter trips to Florida. Jacob K. Stoltzfus, age 74 of 201 Rosedale Road, Christiana, passed away on Friday, July 7, 2023.
He was the husband of Fannie Smucker Stoltzfus. He was born in Christiana, son of the late Benjamin S. and Rachel King Stoltzfus. Frederick Edward Poorbaugh passed into eternity with Jesus on July 4, 2023.
He was born on Oct. 21, 1945 at Fort Riley, KS & grew up in NM. He was a brilliant scholar & academic achiever, graduating with honors from Stanford & Yale. He served as a pastor in several churches, living in 10 states. He moved to Lancaster County for employment as a hospice chaplain, after some years in training others in palliative care. Fred loved God’s creation—desert, mountains, lakes & forests and enjoyed hiking, camping & hunting. He was a member of Wesley Church, with staff & friends there who gave Fred tremendous help on his journey with melanoma. |
