William Eshelman, 92, of Lancaster, passed away Friday, November 6, 2015. He was the husband of Edith (Brown) Eshelman for over 63 years. Born on June 18, 1923, he was the son of H. Roy and Florence (Shirk) Eshelman.
Early in his career, he was associated with John W. Eshelman & Sons Feed Company working in various capacities. Later in life, he provided accounting services for Maple Farms Nursing Home and other local businesses. William was administrator for the former Reformed Mennonite Nursing Home for 10 years. He served as Minister for 47 years in the Reformed Mennonite Church. Jessie Walker, 88, formerly of Peach Bottom, PA, went to be with the Lord on November 6, 2015. She was the widow of the late Robert E. Walker who passed away in 1996. Jessie was a member of Nottingham Missionary Baptist Church. Her family was her life. Born in Ashe County, NC, a daughter of the late William G. and Blanche Hodges Dolinger. Donna L. Pipkin Schultheis, 62, of New Providence, entered into rest unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, November 3, 2015.
Born in Hanover, she was the daughter of Pauline R. Pipkin and the late William Pipkin, Jr. Harriet L. Mellinger, 89, formerly of Kirkwood, entered into rest on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at Susquehanna Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in McDowell County, West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late, Ira E. Sr., and Ina Ann Okie (Hurley) Shumate. She was married to the late, Robert B. Mellinger.
Harriet had been employed by several area sewing factories. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved animals and enjoyed sewing and reading. Cody R. Roark Jr., 86, of Lancaster PA, formerly of Oxford, PA, passed away on November 2, 2015. He was the husband of Julia Mae Arnold Roark.
Cody was a self-employed painter. He had served proudly in the US Army with the rank of sergeant 1st class. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Cody had enjoyed raising his beagle dogs, hunting and fishing. Dr. John Anthony Taddie (age 88), former Solanco High School Principal, passed away on Friday, October 30, 2015 He was engaged to Sarah Weaver Jackson and was the husband of the late Arlene Warfel Taddie who passed away in 1997. Dr. Taddie retired from the Solanco School District in 1986, after 35 years as an educator where he served as Principal of the Solanco High School for 29 years. Prior to his principalship, he was a math and science teacher, serving as department head from 1954-1957, and was the audio-visual and attendance coordinator. Previous to his tenure at Solanco, he taught math and science at Milford Mill Jr/Senior High School in Baltimore County, Maryland. He became Principal at Solanco two weeks prior to the beginning of the school year, creating a student master schedule in short order. Due to the overcrowded conditions at the old Quarryville High School, he drew on the resources of the camping facilities of the Quarryville Presbyterian Home, the old Reynold’s Funeral Home on State Street, the Work Building, the Fritz House and two other buildings near the high school, to handle the student population. His tenure as an educator spanned several generations of students leaving behind a legacy that touched the lives of thousands of people in the Solanco School District. During his tenure as Principal, he was instrumental in introducing college courses for credit taught by college professors for seniors from Solanco and other high schools, the first middle school accreditation for the high school, summer school for make-up courses, advance credit for early graduation, adult evening school, use of data processors and computers for scheduling and attendance , orientation programs for students prior to entering high school, revising requirements for graduation from 13 to 22.4 credits, open campus programs, mid-year graduation, college-style and level at student scheduling, scheduling of all students with no study halls, large and small group classes, semester subjects, in-school suspension programs, work-study program, advanced placement courses, standardized achievement testing, open elective subject of studies, ability to cross-over curriculum or department. Many of these programs were a showcase for other high school educators and colleges, in particular, programs such as the Learning Resources Program, the Vocational Learning Program (VOTEC) and Student Scheduling drew many teachers and administrators from across the nation to visit Solanco. Dr. Taddie graduated from Homer City High School in Homer City, PA in 1945. Following graduation, he entered the Armed Services and served in Bremerhaven, Germany from 1945-47 as a Military Policeman. John Reynolds, 81, of Quarryville, PA, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2015. He was the widower of the late Doris Erb Reynolds who passed away December 6, 2006. A funeral director his entire working career, John had owned the Reynolds Funeral Home, Quarryville, PA. John had served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was born in Lancaster, PA, a son of the late Carl Reynolds, Sr. and Sena Groff Reynolds. Frances B. “Fran” Metzler, 83, of New Providence, entered into rest unexpectedly at her home on Thursday, October 29, 2015. Born in Lancaster County, she was a daughter of the late, Oscar and Anna Mary (Lyons) Bonholtzer. She and her husband Ike S. Metzler had celebrated 61 years of marriage in May. Fran graduated from Quarryville High School in 1950. She went on to work for the former Hubley Co. and also Keppel’s Candy Co. in Lancaster. Fran then worked and retired from the former Bank of Lancaster County after 35 years. Following retirement, Fran and Ike enjoyed traveling, camping, and taking bus tours. She was a very active 81-year member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church. Fran also was an active member of the Robert Fulton Chapter #446 Order of Eastern Star. Theresa A. Rowe, 83, of Drumore PA, formerly of New Providence, went with Jesus on October 30, 2015. She was the widow of the late Harold E. Rowe, who passed away in 1991. Theresa was active in the Quarryville Senior Center where she enjoyed playing bingo, and dancing. She was a neighborhood mother to all of the youth in the New Providence area. Theresa was a member of the New Providence Baptist Church. Born in Lancaster, a daughter of the late William and Ellen P. Carrigan Devonshire. Lester Kenneth Prange, 85, of Kirkwood, PA, residing at the Glen at Willow Valley, passed away peacefully, October 31, 2015. He was the husband of the late Mary Jane “Polly” Patton Prange who passed away in 2003. Ken was president of Lester M. Prange, Inc., and K & J Leasing Inc., trucking companies. Ken was a member of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church. He was also a 32nd degree Free and Accepted Mason of Skerrett Lodge 343, Cochranville, and a member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon Lancaster Forest #27. An avid golfer, Ken enjoyed playing at many of the trucking industries golf outings, and his home course of Tanglewood Manor. He was also a member of the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville. One of Ken’s greatest joys was spending time with his grand and great grandchildren. Born in Christiana, PA, a son of the late Lester M. and Blanche Pickel Prange. |
