James Garland Owen Sumner, Jr., 73, of Oxford, PA passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at home.
Born on July 26, 1949 as the fifth child and only son to delighted parents Jim and Marguerite Donley Sumner, James Garland Owen Sumner, Jr. was the beloved baby brother to Jeanne (John Letterman), Lena (Floyd Hansen), Beverly (Pete McDowell), and Shirley (Jerry Arnold). Jim survived a 50’s and 60’s childhood of biking to Bicknell’s, fishing with his father and playing lots of sports with neighborhood and school friends. He attended Lincoln University and then joined the Navy where he was an electrician on a nuclear Navy submarine. Jim loved his wife, his family, his Church and his Oxford community. After his discharge from the Navy, Jim married Etha McDowell in 1974 and then focused on deciding what he wanted to be when he grew up. He was a lifelong learner, earning degrees from Penn State, West Chester University, and Union Theological Seminary. He used that learning in his own business as a handyman, in the classroom as a teacher, and as a Christian Ed Director. Jim traveled a long faith journey from his early years at the Nazarene church to the Oxford Presbyterian Church where he found a faith family. He was employed there for many years but also loved being a deacon, taking young folks on mission trips, and representing the church on a peace mission to central America. Mary V. (Rehnert) Cartledge, 78, of Oxford, PA, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles Johnson and Harry C. Cartledge. Born in Delaware County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Talbot) Rehnert. She is survived by her loving sister, Jane (Rehnert) Smith; niece, Johanna (Smith) Ryan, husband Paul; and their children, Kaitlyn, Hanna, Danielle, Paul and Quentin Ryan; nephew, Joe Smith and his children, Abigail Manero, Andrea, Andrew and Ashley Smith, Kevin Smith and his wife, Marcella (Jackson) Smith; and their children, Holly, Rebecca and Kevin Smith; and nephew, William Thornton (Trish) and their children, Nathan, Charlie and Vincent Thornton; and by her dear friend of 65 years, Mary (Mulroy) LoGiurato. Harold T. Bryson, Jr.,97, of Quarryville, formerly of Russellville, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. He was the husband of the late Margaret Shifflett Bryson with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. Born in Chester County, he was the son of the late Harold T., Sr. and Clara Harris Bryson. Harold graduated from W. Fallowfield High School, class of 1943. He was a dairy farmer for most of his life in Russellville. Harold was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Oxford. Harold served as Director and Treasurer of Chester-Delaware County Farm Bureau, Director of Coatesville Child Development Center, President of the Oxford Area School Board and served on the Upper Oxford Planning Commission. He was a member of the Oxford Historical Assoc., 75- year member of Skerrett Lodge #343, Past Master in 1956 and Russellville Grange. Joan Marie Bernotsky, 79, of Kirkwood, passed peacefully on Sunday, February 12, 2023 while at home. Born in Girardville, PA, she was the daughter of the late John William and Marie Josephine (Ritro) Peterson. She was the loving wife of the late Joseph G. Bernotsky for 58 years at the time of his passing on April 28, 2022. Joan loved Jesus and being a Christian; her faith was very important to her. She was saved in her 30s and knowing the Lord was a driving force in her life and everything that she did. Joan loved reading scripture and sharing the insights that she gleaned from doing so. While her husband, Joe, was widely known in the community for his networking and leadership efforts, Joan’s support for her community was less well-known, but equally important to those whose lives she touched. In recent years, she had developed a reputation as a skilled counselor and confidante for those going through difficult times in their lives. Patricia A. “Trish” Groff, 55, of West Lampeter Township, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Jeffrey J. Groff, with whom she shared 34 years of marriage. Born in Coatesville, she was the daughter of the late Camillo A. and Nancy L. (Donnelly) Fiore. Trish was a graduate of Octorara High School, class of 1985. Following high school, she attended Brandywine Hospital School of Nursing where she became a Registered Nurse. Trish began working at Brandywine Hospital right after graduating high school and retired in 2008 to become a stay-at-home mom. Trish looked forward to getting away, especially going on vacation cruises. She also enjoyed decorating her home, providing daycare for little children, and helping care for elderly friends in their homes. During her lifetime, Trish had several Schnauzer dogs, made it a priority to go camping, and she was a huge fan of Bon Jovi. She had a great personality, gave the best hugs, and was a friend to many. Trish loved being a wife to Jeff, whom she adored greatly, and she loved being a mother to Jaydon, whom she was very proud of. Nellie Cora Gill, 89 years old, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 10, 2023 at Citizens Nursing Home in Frederick, Maryland. Born on June 12, 1933, in Nottingham, Pennsylvania, Nell was the daughter of the late Ernest Robert Gill and Nellie Jane Duncan Gill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings Mabel Ann Gill, Wilmer Gill, John Gill, Mary Gill, Laura Gill, Millie Casimano, and her brother-in-laws Tom Neufell, Jim Hudgins and John Wilson. She is survived by sisters Norma Neufell and Sara Hudgins, brother-in-law Nick Casimano, nieces and nephews Tom and Jennifer Neufell, Joe Neufell, Mike Neufell, and Donna Neufell, Terri and Mark Wilkinson, Patti and Kyle Smith, Elaine Collyer, Gina and Tom Schell, Julie and Mike Carbiener and Mary Hudgins. Great nieces and nephews include Joe, Casey, Tara, John, Matthew, Andrew, Ashley, Michael, Meghan, Maddie, Morgan, Dylan, Dominick, Jacob, Emma, and Andrew and great grand niece, Aleeya. Her surviving cousins include Pam Duncan Donnelly, Debra Duncan Roney and their families, as well as longtime friends Rebecca Franch and her family. Verna B. Leaman, 89, formerly of Willow Street, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 12, 2023 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. Born in West Willow, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Rebecca (Hertzler) Bauman. Verna was employed at the former Willow Valley Inn & Resort and Willow Valley Retirement Communities for over 35 years. She was an active member of New Danville Mennonite Church. Verna was an excellent hostess and blessed many with her cooking and baking skills. She loved playing games with her friends, doing puzzles, coloring, travelling to Florida with her twin sister, and above all else, spending time with her family. David C. Dickinson "Sporty Dave" a lifelong resident of Cochranville, PA was born on August 10, 1962 and departed on February 3. 2023. He had been facing a host of health troubles over the last few years and was on home dialysis. He attended Octoraro High School and worked for a number of companies over the years including CFM and GAP International. Those travels took him all over the world. Everyone who knew Sporty recognized that he had a gift with engines and systems. As he said, "If it ever ran once, I can make it run again!" He owned and tinkered on any number of old cars and tractors. He was a lifetime member at the Rough and Tumble and never missed a Thresherman's Reunion. Sporty's other true love was music. He almost always had the radio or a CD on and his tastes ran from the Ink Spots to System of a Down. He was never far from one of his guitars. He played with the Gravel Pit Ramblers and other local groups. Sporty specialized in singing Hank Williams and travelled to Alabama quite a few times to play at the annual Hank Williams festival at Hank's boyhood home in Georgiana. Jimmy L. Pennington, 77, of Nescopeck passed away on Friday, January 27, 2023, with his loving family by his side at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born in Little Britain on October 19, 1945, he was a son of the late Arvel D. and Edith (Lewis) Pennington. He graduated from Solanco High School, Quarryville, in 1966 and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1969. Jimmy worked at General Motors in Delaware and then as owner/operator at Tucquan Park Family Campground in Holtwood, from April 1977 until January 1993. He worked hard all of his life and was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. True N. Weeple, 84, of Lancaster, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 12, 2023, while at home. Born in Lewes, DE, she was the daughter of the late John Truit and Mary Smith. She was the loving wife of Thomas A. Weeple for over 61 years. In her earlier years, True worked as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant. As a pastor’s wife, she actively served in many capacities alongside her husband at Clearfield United Methodist Church for over 25 years. True enjoyed reading and loved animals, especially cats. |
