Don't mess with success. That's the way Rising Sun High School's volleyball team is preparing for playoffs. "We really didn't do anything special, just a normal between match work outs," said head coach Rich Wilson. Now the Tigers are preparing for the regional finals. If they win, they'll go on to the state tournament. A win there would give the team its second state title in two years. The Tigers lost only one game last year, to Delaware Military Academy. Perryville coach Dave Ruark called it "a fairytale ending".
In a game which featured more twists and turns than Principio Road, the Panthers outlasted Boonsboro 10-9 in nine innings Saturday in College Park to capture the school's first MPSSAA Class 1A softball state title and complete an undefeated season. Carly White's grand slam in the third inning of the Class 1A softball north region title game was a real eye-opener.
And White did it with her eyes closed. White's blast gave Perryville a 4-0 lead and the host Panthers went on to an 8-3 triumph over McDonough Friday afternoon. Perryville's Zac Zacerous had a sensational sophomore season last year, placing second in both the UCBAC and region tournaments and sixth at the state meet.
Rising Sun freshman Silas Filliaux showed that his UCBAC tourney title was not a fluke, but rather a harbinger of things to come.
Perryville sophomore Cage Jones captured the boys pole vault title at the MPSSAA Class 1A/2A indoor track and field meet Monday, February 22, at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover.
Jones won with a height of 11 feet. "Since I'm only a 10th grader, it's an awesome feeling to win a state title," Jones said. "Coach Weiss (Raissa Moore) moved me to a longer pole so that I could vault higher. My confidence increased. I knew I had a shot at winning the title, especially when I didn't hit a single bar until after I had won. My next goal is to get to 12 feet and higher." The Rising Sun volleyball team will play for the MPSSAA Class 2A state title Monday night, November 23.
The Tigers will play Patuxent at 6 p.m. in Ritchie Coliseum on the campus of the University of Maryland. Rising Sun is seeking its third state title, having won in 2006 and 2007. Stories and photos will be posted online as soon as possible. The Panthers prevailed 25-13, 25-13, 25-20. Winning pitcher Sam Hogue belted two home runs and knocked in seven as Rising Sun clinched the District 5 Major Division baseball title with a 15-0 win over Elkton in four innings Friday night at Eder Park.
After Hogue struck out the side in the top of the first, Rising Sun rallied for 11 runs in the home half to take a commanding lead. |
