 Matt Backert believes his Maryland Baseball Club offers an experience aspiring players and their families are seeking.
The Rising Sun High graduate began the program last summer and is ramping up plans for a bigger and better 2019 season. The club had six teams in its rookie campaign. "It was very difficult to get started," Backert acknowledged. He was able to attract players from other programs since he had worked with them in other organizations. It was something of a leap of faith. "Here we go," Backert said he thought at the time. "Let's see what happens." Theraflu, Advil, and Slim Jims.
Mix in the requisite good pitching, solid defense, and timely hitting, and it amounted to a winning combination for the Chesapeake City Major Division baseball All-Stars. Chesapeake City captured the Little League Maryland District 5 title with a 6-4 comeback win over North East Thursday night. North East advanced to the championship round of the District 5 Major Division baseball tournament with a thrilling 8-6 win over Rising Sun in seven innings Wednesday night.
North East wriggled out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the sixth then tallied twice in the top of the seventh to pull out the dramatic victory. Rising Sun remained alive in the District 5 Major baseball tournament with a 14-3 victory over Elkton in four innings Tuesday night, July 10.
Chesapeake City gained the upper hand in the Little League Maryland District 5 Major Division baseball tournament by blanking North East 8-0 Monday night, July 9.
Chesapeake City and host North East entered the week as the two undefeated teams remaining in the Little League Maryland District 5 Major Division baseball tournament.
First round
Havre de Grace 16, Perryville 3 Luis Utrera homered in the fourth as Havre de Grace scored four times to snap a 3-3 tie. Havre de Grace broke the game wide open with nine runs in the sixth. Rising Sun captured the Little League Maryland District 5 Junior Division baseball title in convincing fashion.
Rising Sun walloped a weary Chesapeake City team 18-1 in four innings Friday night at Eder Park. Rising Sun captured the District 5 Senior Division baseball title with an 8-5 triumph over Havre de Grace Wednesday night, June 27.
Undefeated Elkton advanced to the championship round of the district 8-10 baseball tournament with a 4-0 triumph over Rising Sun Tuesday, June 26, in Chesapeake City.
