The home opener for the Panthers proved to be a letdown.
The Golden Elks defeated the Panthers 8-2 on Tuesday, March 21. Perryville girls basketball were in it to win it. The Panthers defeated Rising Sun at home 49-26 last Thursday. Perryville took control of the game leading by 13 at the end of the half. "They were kind of lingering around at 13 points and they (Rising Sun) had just hit a three and we try to remind them that a couple of threes and we're right back in this," said Perryville head coach Mike Blizzard. "They controlled the board in the first half. They are definitely a very talented team. We did not match up well with them," said Rising Sun head coach Kathy Stoudt. Rising Sun wrestling battled to a 42-37 victory over visiting Perryville on Wednesday, January 25. "We had high expectations coming in and then we had a couple of injuries and a couple of guys go down. We only have one of our three senior captains healthy. So its kind of put a dim on our season when it comes to dual meets. So this is one that we had circled as a winnable one that would mean a lot to the kids. Our guys went out there and wrestled hard," said Perryville head coach Thad Gough. Rising Sun wrestling team downed Elkton at home 67-6 on Wednesday, January 18. "I think we were a little better off than we expected. Last week we had a real tough week coming out of Battle at the Bridge, going into John Carroll and Dunbar, then going into Bel Air. Coming out of the tri-meet with John Carroll and Dunbar with a win was a huge mark. So that kind of put us in a little better spot," said Rising Sun head coach Cory Hall. The Tigers took the lead after Silas Filliaux defeated Garret Deleon by major decision 13-4 at 132. They held their lead after Noah Ulrich (138) and Caleb Kirk (145) both added pins. After having a slow start to their season, Bo Manor boys basketball team captured a 62-58 victory over Rising Sun on January 17. "It feels good to have a win, they've practiced hard. We are in a good spot right now and we always do our best in February," said Bo Manor head coach Sandy Grimes. "The first win of the season feels really good. On a road game to come out and get the win, it felt good," said Bo Manor player Cameron Garcia. The Tigers took control in the first when Casey Baker added eight points which gave them a two point advantage. In the second, Rising Sun held its lead over Bo Manor by scoring a total of 22 points, bringing the score to 38-30 at the end of the first half. "I thought we were pretty much in control of the game and we just made some mistakes. Things happen and (we) made a few mistakes that just cost us in the end," said Rising Sun head coach Don Passenant. North East girls basketball team downed visiting Rising Sun 44-33 on Tuesday night, January 10. "We are getting better every week. Today we played together as a team and everyone contributed," said North East head coach Chris Hadjis. "We were behind a little bit but we were able to comeback and they showed another great effort." In the beginning it seemed as though the Tigers were in it to win it but when North East's top scorer, Janiya Bibbons came onto the court, things changed. "She is really athletic, she was killing us on the board, in the paint. Even when she didn't get a rebound she was jumping up and tapping the ball out and she really hurt us," said Rising Sun head coach Kathy Stoudt. The Indians struggled with Rising Sun's defense but were able to change the pace and scored 19 points in the first half. Perryville boys basketball team is ready to take on Harford county after their 48-40 win over Bo Manor's Eagles on January 11. "We played well enough to win, we do just enough to win. Bo Manor played very well in the first half. I thought they were going to run out of the gym with us, they didn't. We stayed close (within) one point," said Perryville head coach Charles Givens. At the start of the game both Perryville and Bo Manor battled to take the lead. The Panthers scored ten points in the first and the Eagles scored eight. They were behind by three until Anthony Pompilli scored a three point basket, which pulled them ahead by one at the end of the first. The Eagles scored a total of 15 points and Perryille only scored 14, which allowed them to have a two point advantage at the half. After a slow start to the season and only winning two games before the Green-N-Gold tournament. North East head coach Chris Hadjis said it felt like Christmas all over again, when his team won. North East battled Tome in the tournament at Cecil College on December 27. North East topped Tome with a score of 36-28. He credited the Indians' success to the fact that they are playing as a team and many of their injured players are back. The Elks didn't take a break over the Christmas holiday, capturing a win over Bo Manor in girls basketball. Elkton defeated the Eagles 55-35 on December 27 during the Green-N-Gold tournament at Cecil College. "We laid an egg with C.M. Wright last week and the girls learned from that. I was really happy with how they prepared for this game. They were fully prepared," said Elkton head coach Chris Dunn. The Elks practiced hard for the tournament and used some new strategies. "Our offense against their zone that was something different that we put in this game and it worked really well," said Dunn. After losing to Patterson Mill, 57-56 on December 20, the Golden Elks boys baskteball team came out ready to win against North East. "We came out with a very aggressive mentality. We were frustrated when last nights game ended and we wanted to use that as motivation and come out tonight and make a statement," said Elkton head coach Joe Zang. That mentality worked and the Elks defeated the Indians 67-34 on December 21. Even though North East fell to Elkton, head coach Alan Foskey is confident his team can improve their flaws and become ready for when play offs begin. "We have to regroup, work on our deficits and continue to grind in an effort to become play off ready." Elktons top scorers were Chino Purnell, Travias "Tazz" Smith, J'Qwan Benson, and Ryan Thompson. |
