Just because Rising Sun High School's annual Powderpuff game ended in a 0-0 tie doesn't mean there weren't any winners.
The Tuesday, November 20, event held in the stadium generated funds for the school's Student Council, advisor Samantha Heil said. The Student Council uses the money to adopt a family for Christmas and buy breakfast for donors at the annual blood drive held in the spring. "Those are the big things," Heil said. Chris Johnson has enjoyed a great deal of success in his Perryville football coaching career.
He guided the Panthers to the 2011 state title game and won another region championship the following season. But Johnson has never had more genuine affection for a team than he has for the 2018 squad. Although it wasn't crystal clear at the time, when Williamsport withstood a Rising Sun rally to end the first set, the Wildcats were well on their way to the 'W'.
Williamsport walloped the Tigers 26-24, 25-13, 29-9 in a state semifinal game at Ritchie Coliseum Tuesday night, November 13. West Nottingham Academy is making another foray into the ultra-competitive world of big-time high school basketball.
The Rams have left the Maryland Independent League in boys basketball after capturing the conference championship last season, their first league title since 2010. WNA will face a grueling schedule designed to challenge a talented 12-player roster stocked with college prospects and featuring student-athletes from six different countries. Bohemia Manor's Zach Laird showed off his sprinting skills when it mattered most.
Laird overtook Boonsboro's Henry Schmidt with about 150 yards left in Saturday's MPSSAA cross country meet at Hereford High to capture his second consecutive state title. The Rising Sun volleyball team secured its sixth straight region title with a 25-12, 25-16, 25-12 triumph over Easton Saturday afternoon at Chesapeake College. Following Friday's four-set victory over North Dorchester in the 1A east region title match, Perryville players posed for photos with four fingers raised on each hand.
The gesture signified the Panthers' eighth straight region championship. "It's really amazing," Perryville's record-setting setter Jordan Carr said. "Not a lot of sports at our school get to experience this eight years in a row. Coming in and being a part of the team there's an expectation that we've got to be region champs again. That's what we strive for every year. That's our mindset throughout the season." The Rising Sun volleyball team swept visiting Elkton in a region semifinal match Wednesday night, November 7.
The Tigers triumphed 25-7, 25-14, 25-15. The Perryville volleyball team opened the playoffs with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-20 sweep of visiting Bohemia Manor Monday night, November 5.
The Rising Sun football team closed out a turnaround season with a 28-7 triumph over host North East in the rain Friday night.
Rising Sun's longshot playoff hopes had been dashed the night before when Parkside walloped Washington, but the focused Tigers still took care of business. Susquehanna Division champion Rising Sun finishes the season 7-3 after winning just one game last year. "It's been a fantastic season," Rising Sun coach Clem Vaughan said. "I couldn't be more proud of these guys, the way they worked in the offseason and came after it. They were receptive to change and came in after it." |
