The Rising Sun Little League 10-11 baseball All-Stars completed their remarkable run with a state championship.
Rising Sun triumphed in five straight must-win games including a championship-clinching 11-8 victory over West Salisbury Saturday in Frederick. With its ace pitchers unable to throw because of Little League pitching limitations, Rising Sun turned to starter Xavier Gilcher and reliever Mason Craig. Gilcher and Craig did precisely what manager Clayton Gilcher had hoped – pepper the strike zone, challenge the West Salisbury hitters, and rely on their defense for some help. The Rising Sun Little League 9-10 baseball All-Stars captured the state title with an 11-8 triumph over West Salisbury Saturday in Frederick. Much more to come later including recap and photos.
The Rising Sun 10-11 baseball All-Stars scored four runs in the top of the sixth to overcome a 2-0 deficit and defeat West Salisbury 4-2 Friday evening in Frederick.
The two teams play Saturday at 1 p.m. with the state title on the line. Ethan Pierce was the winning pitcher. Jon Valentine scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and Joey Trout had an RBI double in the inning. Rising Sun has won four straight elimination games after losing to West Salisbury in the first round. Xavier Gilcher is expected to get the start for Rising Sun. Leading 3-1, West Salisbury broke the game wide open with eight runs in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Teaman belted a grand slam and Jacob Long blasted a two-run roundtripper. Josh DeRocher belted a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to propel the Sharpsburg Little League All-Stars to a 10-9 triumph over Elkton in a Major Division Maryland state tournament winners' bracket game Thursday.
Sharpsburg trailed 8-4 entering the half-inning before rallying to take a 10-8 lead. The Rising Sun Little League 10-11 baseball All-Stars prevailed in their third consecutive must-win game.
Rising Sun defeated Conococheague 10-5 Thursday night to advance to the championship round. Rising Sun needs to post two straight wins over West Salisbury to claim the state title. The two teams meet Friday night at 6 in Frederick. West Salisbury downed Rising Sun 7-3 in the first round last Saturday. Starter Sam Hogue fanned 11 and allowed one hit over 4 2/3 scoreless innings and three relievers combined to get the final four outs. Rising Sun tallied twice in the top of the first and never looked back. With one out, Mason Craig bounced a single up the middle and Ethan Pierce singled sharply to center. Hogue knocked in the first run with a single to center and Xavier Gilcher plated a run on a groundout. The Rising Sun Little League 10-11 baseball All-Stars staved off elimination with a 7-1 triumph over Easton Wednesday.

Rising Sun is one of four teams remaining in the tournament. West Salisbury, which defeated Rising Sun 7-3 in the opening round Sunday, is the lone undefeated team. |
