Young and old still like to play the sport they love. Mike Seydell, a former Rising Sun High School soccer player, Coach Ken Ulrich, and John Harnett helped make that happen when they planned the annual alumni soccer game. Their goal was to create a stronger sense of community with the current players and the alumni. They also wanted a game that had meaning. Hartnett's brother, a former RSHS soccer player, was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2012. "So we decided to create the alumni game to raise money for a scholarship in his name", Seydell said in an email. "This year we decided to expand and allow for the women's alumni to play a game as well because last years was so successful", Seydell wrote. "Last year it was just boys and the game raised around $2200", said Harnett. "Around 50 guys and around 22 girls came out to play". The Elkton Elks defeated visiting North Caroline's Bulldogs in the East Regional final game Friday night, November 18. "We were in this football game to win it," said Elkton head coach Matt Feeney. The team had lost last year to North Caroline and their victory this year tasted sweet. "We wrote last years score on a white board to be a reminder of what happened, a lot of the guys that played last year did not want to have the same result," said Feeney. The Elks were the first to score with a touchdown and point after kick. North Caroline's Bulldogs were unable to move the ball in the first quarter. The Elks continued to score with two more touchdowns, which brought the score to 19-0 at the end of the first quarter. Don't mess with success. That's the way Rising Sun High School's volleyball team is preparing for playoffs. "We really didn't do anything special, just a normal between match work outs," said head coach Rich Wilson. Now the Tigers are preparing for the regional finals. If they win, they'll go on to the state tournament. A win there would give the team its second state title in two years. The Tigers lost only one game last year, to Delaware Military Academy. The Panthers field hockey team downed Bo Manor's Eagles 4-1 in Perryville on Monday afternoon, October 31. The Panthers came out strong in the first half, scoring two points, and came back in the second half to add another pair of goals. The Panthers defeated Rising Sun's Tigers in Perryville on Friday night, November 4. Rising Sun started out strong with a touchdown, but were unable to make a point after kick. The Panthers came back hard, ending the half leading the Tigers 28-6. |
