Young and old still like to play the sport they love. Mike Seydell, a former Rising Sun High School soccer player, Coach Ken Ulrich, and John Harnett helped make that happen when they planned the annual alumni soccer game. Their goal was to create a stronger sense of community with the current players and the alumni. They also wanted a game that had meaning. Hartnett's brother, a former RSHS soccer player, was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2012. "So we decided to create the alumni game to raise money for a scholarship in his name", Seydell said in an email. "This year we decided to expand and allow for the women's alumni to play a game as well because last years was so successful", Seydell wrote. "Last year it was just boys and the game raised around $2200", said Harnett. "Around 50 guys and around 22 girls came out to play". One of the players, Alaina Akcakaya, came out to have fun and support the Hartnett family. "It's a great alumni game, but mostly to come and support Ryan and his friends and family. I think it is an awesome sponsorship that they are doing and its exciting to have a scholarship for soccer", said Akcakaya. "I thought it was going to be like a little scrimmage but it turned out better than I thought. It's definitely harder (to play as you get older), you are not as flexible as you once were", said Akcakaya. The "Young Boyz"(2014-2017) defeated the Old Dawgz (1997,2004-2013) in the second annual Rising Sun High School boys soccer alumni game at Calvert Regional Park on Saturday. Zak Wiegand made a goal with an assist from Cody Thomas to bring the score to 1-0 at the half. Michael Seydell added a goal for the Old Dawgz with an assist from Kenny Price. The Young Boyz fired back with three goals. One from Brandon Brooks, Christian Scott, and Adam Parker. Logan Holtman made two assists and Nick Holtman added one. Chris Orr and Dan Hanzelka were the goalies for the the Young Boyz, while Terry Burkhardt and Josh McKinney played goalie for the Old Dawgz. The young girls also defeated the old girls on Saturday. Lina Lack made a goal along with Taylor Mockins. Jackie Barbon also tallied three goals for young girls. For the old girls Katie Millard made two penalty kicks to give the old girls a score of two. The final score was 5-2. "Our main goal is to raise nearly five thousand dollars this year," said Hartnett. The players made a $20 donation to help raise money for the scholarship and for the t-shirt they added this year, he said. Comments are closed.
