The Rising Sun volleyball team captured the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference title with a four-game triumph over Perryville Wednesday night in North East.

    The Perryville girls soccer team did their best to try to make sure the Tuesday, October 29 region quarterfinal playoff game at Kent County wasn't decided by penalty kicks.
    The Panthers outshot Kent 42-14 through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods but their worst fears were realized when the Trojans outscored Perryville 2-0 in a penalty kick shootout to win the game 1-0.

    Brianna Bailey scored following a corner with no time remaining on the clock to propel the Rising Sun field hockey team to a 2-1 triumph over Edgewood Monday in a region semifinal game.
    The Tigers were awarded a corner in the waning seconds. In games where a goal by the offense would change the outcome, the teams play out the corner until the defense is able to clear the ball out of the dotted circle or unless the offense commits an infraction.
    Emily Easter took the corner and sent a pass to the top of the circle. Bailey allowed the ball to roll past her to Mallory Tiffin. Tiffin made a pass to Bailey and the Tiger junior scored her second goal of the game to end it about 10 seconds after the whistle would've sounded had the Tigers not earned a corner.
    "Nervewracking," Rising Sun coach Julie Eller said. "I was getting very worried because it just seemed like we couldn't generate any offense. "Woo. It's wearing on my nerves."
    The Tigers travel to Hereford Wednesday at 4 p.m. for the region championship game.
    Bailey had scored the overtime game-winner in a 4-3 regular season victory over Edgewood in a game the Tigers trailed 3-1.
    That crossed her mind during the late stages of the second meeting.
    "I just knew that we wanted this one more than anything," Bailey said. "Because we beat this team before and we knew we could do it again. If we didn't I think we'd all be pretty upset about that. And we all want to continue our season. Big motivator."
    Bailey has come up with a number of critical goals this season.
    "I would like to think hopefully some other girls will start stepping up," Eller said. "She plays a position that should be finishing all the time anyway. That left wing is definitely really important. We should be carrying it up the right and crossing it. The fact that all the goals are coming from that position is not surprising. But she definitely is a gigantic player, who has had some really great shots. I'm glad I have her for another year."
    The Tigers struggled to get good scoring chances for much of the game.
    "We were having trouble in the first half, too really," Eller said. "Our gaps between the midfield and the offense were just huge. It's hard to generate momentum that way."
    Bailey had given the Tigers a 1-0 lead with 1:56 left in the first half.
    "I wasn't really expecting it because I knew it wasn't my best shot I could take," said Bailey. "But coach always tells us take any shot you can get, even if it isn't your best shot it could still go in."
    The Rams tied it with 23 minutes left in the second half.
    

    The Rising Sun boys soccer team opened the postseason with a 3-1 triumph over visiting North East Friday afternoon.
    Kane Watson scored in the opening minute and Tanner Fuchs and Johnny Bragg each added a goal for the Tigers.
    The Indians finally got on the board with two minutes left in the contest.
    The Tigers advanced to a Tuesday, October 29 game at Patterson Mill.

    The Rising Sun girls soccer team was ousted from the region tournament with a 2-1 first round loss to visiting Patterson Mill Friday afternoon.
    The Tigers struck first on a goal by Jackie Barbon. Barbon hit the post with a blast after taking a short corner. The ball came back out to Barbon and the sophomore defender left-footed a shot over the head of the Huskies' keeper.
    Patterson Mill scored the equalizer in the 25th minute on a breakaway. Three minutes later, the Huskies grabbed the lead when a throw-in went through the box and a Patterson Mill player scored from the far post.
    The Tigers had a couple of second half chances, the best coming when a Teresa Reid shot from 25 yards out was parried over the crossbar by the Huskies' keeper.

    North Harford's Nick Fransham won the boys race and led the Hawks to the team title.
    Nicole Wohlfort of Fallston captured the girls race and C. Milton Wright won the team crown.

    The Rising Sun football team suffered a 33-7 setback to visiting Elkton on Homecoming Friday night.
    The Tigers fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and Elkton scored two plays later to go up 7-0 just 59 seconds into the game.
    Rising Sun tied it when quarterback Benn Lukk tossed an 18-yard scoring strike to Ryan Barrick with 5:29 left in the opening quarter.
    The Elks countered quickly and took the lead for good on a 19-yard jaunt by Niles Scott. The PAT made it 14-7 with 3:49 to go in the first.
    Elkton added a 65-yard TD pass with 4:55 left in the second quarter and added another score 2:53 later to take a 26-7 lead into halftime.
    After a third quarter marred by choppy play and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, the Elks capped the scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter.
    Perryville lost its third straight game, 38-6 to Fallston.
    In playoff soccer action, the Rising Sun boys downed North East 3-1.
    The Tiger girls were ousted by Patterson Mill 2-1.
   

    Trailing 14-12 in the fifth and decisive game, the Rising Sun volleyball team was a point away from doing something it hadn't done all season – lose a match.
    But the Tigers won the next four points to finish off a dramatic victory over Bel Air and complete the first undefeated regular season in the program's storied history.

    The Rising Sun boys soccer team posted a 5-1 triumph over host West Nottingham Academy Thursday afternoon.
    The Tigers got on the board early on a goal by Michael Catena. WNA tied it but Rising Sun regained the lead seconds before the halftime whistle on a goal by Brad Alexander.
    Alexander, Catena, and Jamie Butler each added a goal in the second half.
    Tanner Fuchs and Nick Holtman each had an assist.
    The Tigers played to a 1-1 tie with North East Tuesday, October 15.
    Catena had the Rising Sun goal.

    The Rising Sun girls finished first and the boys were second in a home cross country meet Tuesday, October 15.
    The Tigers (26) won the girls competition over North East (46) and Edgewood (60).
    Rising Sun's Autumn Russell (22:40) was second behind North East's Kaitlyn Henderson (21:59).
    The Tigers' Emma Wheeler was fourth followed by Kiona Brady (sixth), Cate Dymowski (eighth), and Arianna Wheeler (ninth).
    Edgewood had five of the top six finishers to easily claim the boys race.
    Rising Sun runners occupied the 7-10 spots with Damian Bishoff seventh followed by Ian Gompers, Joey Hurm, and Seth McKeown.
