West Salisbury sent Rising Sun into the losers bracket of the state Junior baseball tournament with a tense 2-1 triumph Sunday.
West Salisbury tallied twice in the bottom of the sixth and then withstood a Rising Sun rally in the seventh. Perryville captured the district Junior softball title with a 10-0 victory over Elkton in four innings last Wednesday. Emily Phillips and Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick combined on a no-hitter for Perryville. Phillips walked the first two batters of the game but struck out the next three hitters. Perryville exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the first to take command. With one out, Kadi Davis and Ellen Little walked. After a wild pitch, Phillips reached on an error that allowed Davis to score. After Ashley Meekins walked, Carly White's fly ball to left was misplayed allowing two more runs to score. Phillips escaped a rundown during the play. Erin Murphy then slapped a two-run single to right to make it 5-0. Perryville tacked on three more runs without benefit of a hit. In the second, Murphy singled and eventually scored on a groundout by Lacie Flores. Perryville advances to the state tournament, which begins July 20 in Sharpsburg. Rising Sun claimed the district Junior baseball title with an 11-4 triumph over Elkton Sunday afternoon in Rising Sun. Rising Sun led 3-2 before breaking the game open. The hosts jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Kody Brown lashed a double to right-center. Austin McMillan hit a comebacker but the throw to third was late and low. Brown scored on a wild pitch and McMillan scored on a passed ball. Rising Sun got another run in the second. Tyler Snyder and Chad Sherrow walked and Jonah Davis executed a sacrifice bunt. LOSERS BRACKET North East 13, Havre de Grace 0 Brandon Tolbert was 3 for 4 and Hunter Russell and Riley Brady each added a pair of hits. Rising Sun 20, Perryville 2 Adam Snyder was 3 for 5 with a triple. Jason Mock was 3 for 5 and Jeff Leonard was 3 for 4. Austin McGrady and Sam Hogue each added a pair of hits. Jon Valentine tripled. For Perryville, Anthony Cole, Austen Bowman, and Erik Lee each had a hit. Host Chesapeake City captured the Major softball district tournament with a 5-4 triumph over Perryville Saturday. Sydnee Ferguson walked and scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Perryville had tied the game with a pair of runs in the top half. Savannah Sheats tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts. Aubrey Heath, Abigail Heath, Abby Moore, and Katherine Jones each singled and scored. Kayla Thompson contributed a single. For Perryville, pitcher Aubrey Hill and Payton Jourdan each singled and scored. Hanna Downes and Jordyn Pollitt each reached on an error and scored. Mara Little added a single.
