Tennis has finally become Mallory Tiffin's main sport.
Tiffin first started playing on the Rising Sun High School team as a way to stay in condition for the field hockey season. She got so good at it she's going to play in college. Tiffin recently signed a letter of intent to attend Waynesburg (Pa.) University. Havre de Grace upended Rising Sun 7-5 in a Little League Maryland District 5 Junior Division softball first round game Monday in Elkton.
With the score tied 3-3, Havre de Grace took the lead for good with two unearned runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. Perryville and Rising Sun posted first round wins as the Little League Maryland District 5 softball tournament got underway Sunday in North East.
In the second contest of the day, Perryville nipped Chesapeake City 2-1 in a well-played game. With the game tied 1-1, Perryville scored the go-ahead run in the home half of the fourth. Elkton and Rising Sun both notched a win Sunday and are the two remaining undefeated teams in the Little League Maryland District 5 Senior Division baseball tournament being played in Havre de Grace.
The Elkton All-Stars manufactured a run in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Chesapeake City 5-4 Friday in a Senior Division baseball first round game in Havre de Grace.
Jeremy Husfelt started the decisive rally by drawing a walk. He advanced to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Rudy Webster. Husfelt moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball with one out. All of today's Little League Maryland District 5 tournament games have been postponed by rain.
In Senior baseball, Rising Sun will play Perryville at noon followed by Elkton vs. host Havre de Grace. Tomorrow's start time for the two Major softball games in North East have not been announced. Havre de Grace will play Rising Sun in the opener followed by Chesapeake City vs. Perryville. The Junior softball tournament begins Sunday in Elkton with Havre de Grace taking on Rising Sun. Start time has not been announced. The Senior softball tournament follows with Chesapeake City playing Perryville. The Perryville All-Stars opened the District 5 Senior baseball tournament with a 4-2 triumph over North East Thursday evening at Stancil Park in Havre de Grace.
Perryville's Zach Strong came on in relief with the bases loaded and one out in the second and his team trailing 2-0. In 6 2/3 innings of work, Strong struck out 12 and allowed just two hits to earn the victory. The Cecil Skipjacks walloped Bear (Del.) 19-0 in a Babe Ruth baseball game played at Bard Cameron Tuesday night.
