The Perryville football team extended its regular season streak by pulling away late for a second straight game. The Panthers (4-0) scored the first 14 points of the fourth quarter on the way to a 38-30 triumph over host Patterson Mill Friday night. The Huskies had gotten within one on a long 4th down touchdown pass but missed the potential tying extra point. Perryville responded with two touchdowns before Patterson Mill scored with two minutes to go. Quarterback Cam Cunningham completed 16 of 22 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns. Tyrell Hollingsworth hauled in six passes for 129 yards and two scores. Ethan Griffin had six catches for 28 yards and a touchdown. Griffin rushed for 164 yards on 20 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns. Josh Bargsten booted a 29-yard field goal and made all five extra point attempts. Tony Smith made 18 tackles including two for losses. Hollingsworth had an interception. Perryville has won 24 consecutive regular seasons games since dropping their final two contests of the 2010 season. The Panthers are a combined 29-2 in that stretch counting playoff games. The Rising Sun volleyball team turned in an outstanding performance at the Bulldog Classic at North Caroline Saturday.
The Tigers advanced to the finals before falling to 4A school South River in the finals, 25-9, 25-22. Playing their fourth straight match, the Tigers were unable to keep up with a well rested South River squad. Rising Sun had split with South River in pool play, 25-21, 18-25. The Tigers defeated Northern (25-21, 25-18) and St. Vincent Pallotti (25-20, 25-17) in pool play. The Tigers entered the quarterfinals as the fifth seed based on won-loss record and point differential. Rising Sun downed fourth-seeded Leonardtown 25-16, 22-25, 15-8 and then vanquished top-seeded Huntingtown in the semifinals, 25-18, 27-25. Coach Rich Wilson said the total team effort was led by the Tigers' defensive players – Victoria Werner, Erica Brown, and Marie Hyman, along with outside hitter Bailey Hook, who continually kept the ball in play to allow the offense to finish points. Blockers tallied 23 stuff blocks, a per game average of 1.8 led by Breanne Haley's nine. Earlier in the week, the Tigers stayed undefeated in regular season play including a key win over Fallston. Trailing 2-1 at intermission, Tiffin tallied twice in the second half off assists from Wesley and Megan Haraldsson. Perryville topped the Tigers 6-2 Monday. Click here for a recap and photo gallery from that game. The Rising Sun football team fell to 0-4 on the year with a 22-14 loss to visiting Joppatowne Friday night. The Tigers could not convert on 4th and goal from the 5 when a shotgun snap eluded quarterback Benn Lukk with 8:10 left. Rising Sun got another chance when Josh Anderson recovered a fumble on his own 24 with 3:35 remaining. Facing a 4th and 3 from the Joppatowne 33 with 1:31 to go, Dan Willert came up a yard shy of the first down and Joppatowne ran out the clock. Willert and Alex Billings each had success on the ground. Willert rushed for 60 yards on 12 carries and Billings gained 43 yards on 14 attempts. Lukk completed 10 of 17 passes for 117 yards. Ryan Barrick caught four passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns. Kyle Lammey made 11 tackles and Kyle Miller added nine. Tanner Fuchs, Kane Watson, and Nick Holtman scored for the Tigers. Fuchs gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead midway through the first half and Watson made it 2-0 a minute later. Holtman headed home a shot 10 minutes into the second half to up the advantage to 3-0. Josh Burkhard scored for the Elks. The Rising Sun girls soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to C. Milton Wright Wednesday afternoon The Tigers played the perennial state power Mustangs to a deadlock in the first half before C. Milton Wright scored thee goals in the final 40 minutes. The Perryville boys and girls won the team titles at the Cecil County Invitational cross country meet held in Perryville Community Park Tuesday. A pair of state champions captured individual crowns. The Panthers' Jordan Dodson, a 2011 state champ, won the girls race while reigning champion Bohemia Manor's Ty Franks prevailed on the boys side. The Perryville girls (49) topped Rising Sun (67), North East (73), Bohemia Manor (89), Elkton (112), and The Tome School (117). The Tigers were first among 1A-2A schools and second behind Bel Air in the overall standings. Zach Van Dyke led the way with an 82 followed by Adam Janney (89), Nick Arrante (90), Zack Alexander (92), and Sean Goodie (102). Bohemia Manor's Lauren Mayse and Elkton's Genesis Diaz also advanced to the state tournament. Photographs and more results will be printed in the October 1 edition of The Herald. The Rising Sun volleyball team grabbed the upper hand in the Chesapeake Division race by topping Fallston Monday, September 23. The Tigers triumphed 25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 25-18. Breanne Haley (25 blocks) and Christine Nietert (18) led a strong Tiger performance at the net. Bailey Hook had a team-high 15 kills and Lacey Swartout added seven.
