The Elkton field hockey team lost 3-0 to Kent County in a Section final (region semifinals) game Monday, October 30.
Big plays made a huge difference.
Jalen Giles scored four touchdowns, three coming on plays of more than 50 yards, to propel the North East football team to a 48-28 triumph over visiting Perryville Friday night. The Rising Sun field hockey team admitted it was disgruntled it hadn't been able to muster a regulation goal despite dominating play for much of the game.
It didn't take long into overtime to end the Tigers' frustration. Meghan Szkalak scored 38 seconds into the extra session to propel Rising Sun to a 1-0 triumph over host North East in the second round of the region tournament Thursday afternoon. The Bohemia Manor boys cross country team captured the team title at the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference meet which was held Wednesday, October 25 in Fair Hill.
The Eagles (34) defeated Fallston (92), C. Milton Wright (94), Bel Air (94), Harford Tech (132), Elkton (174), North Harford (177), Patterson Mill (180), Perryville (257), Rising Sun (277), Aberdeen (282), Edgewood (303), and North East (334). Rising Sun volleyball coach Rich Wilson doesn't despise Senior Night but he is leery of the unique set of challenges it presents.
The Tigers were a bit inconsistent but plenty good enough to sweep Harford Tech 25-18, 25-11, 25-15 Tuesday night, October 24. It's not that often a coach will laud his defense even though his team allowed 49 points.
Last Thursday night was one of those times for Perryville coach Chris Johnson. The Panthers did a decent job of limiting Harford Tech's explosive running back Jalen Dangerfield, but four critical turnovers – two of them returned for touchdowns – led to Perryville's undoing and a 49-12 loss to the unbeaten Cobras on Homecoming. North East girls soccer coach Matt Roberts says Rising Sun is the team to beat.
That's exactly what the Indians did Tuesday night, October 17. North East topped the Tigers 2-1 to claim a second straight Susquehanna Division title and the top seed in the region tournament. Perryville's Jordyn Pollitt capped a stellar career by capturing the individual county title and leading the Panthers to the team title at the county golf tournament Tuesday, October 17 in Middletown, Delaware.
"A great way to finish off my senior year," said Pollitt. Elkton put a bit of a damper on the Perryville girls soccer team's Senior Night by blanking the Panthers 4-0 Wednesday night, October 18.
