UPDATE: Rising Sun was eliminated Tuesday night.
Rising Sun Little League's Major Division baseball team downed West End 14-4 in five innings Monday to remain in the hunt for a state title. Sam Hogue was 4 for 4 with a grand slam and six RBIs. Adam Snyder collected two hits including a home run. Beni Gilcher was 2 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Jason Mock had a hit and an RBI and scored two runs. Cade Eyman and Ethan Pierce both knocked in a run. Austin Jacob scored twice. Brayden Patterson started for Rising Sun and pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings. Gilcher threw 1 1/3 innings and Ethan Gullion recorded two strikeouts in an inning of work. Rising Sun plays another losers bracket game tonight at 5:30. The Perryville Senior Division softball team dropped its first two games in the region tournament in Massachusetts.
Perryville fell 3-2 to New Jersey Sunday. Perryville threatened to tie the game in the sixth but was unable to score. If the Rising Sun Little League Major Division All-Stars baseball team is going to win a state championship, it will have to do so the same way the nucleus of the squad took the 10-11 title last summer.
Just like last season, Rising Sun dropped the first game of the tournament, falling 6-2 to Delmar Saturday in Easton. The Rising Sun 10-11 baseball team lost 7-3 to Delmar Thursday night in the state title game.
Delmar finished the tournament undefeated. Cecil was ousted from the Babe Ruth regional tournament with a 2-1 loss to Schenectady, N.Y. last Thursday afternoon.
Brennan Martz, Dustin Krahn, Justin Frey, and Owen Null each had a hit for Cecil, who mustered just seven hits and one run in the tournament. Cecil went up in the top of the second. With one out, David Jackson reached on an error, Frey walked, and Null singled to load the bases. Jackson scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Roosevelt. Schenectady took the lead with two runs in the home half of the third. Cecil had an outstanding opportunity to tie the game or take the lead in the sixth, but left the bases loaded. The Skipjacks were retired in order in the seventh. Cecil's starting pitcher, Roosevelt, recorded five strikeouts in five innings of work. Martz fanned two in a perfect inning. The Rising Sun Little League 10-11 baseball team stayed live in the state tournament with a 7-4 triumph over Conococheague Wednesday night in Arbutus.
Trailing 4-3, Rising Sun rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth – all coming with two outs. Cecil dropped its first game of the Babe Ruth regional tournament 2-0 to host Pine Forge (Pa.) Wednesday night.
David Jackson pitched brilliantly for Cecil, giving up two hit and no earned runs. Pine Forge scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings. Cecil stranded seven runners in scoring position including second and third in the first inning. Jake Keane, Dustin Krahn, and Tyler Ferguson each had a hit for Cecil. The Skipjacks return to action Thursday at 4 p.m., needing a win to stay alive. The Cecil Skipjacks Babe Ruth state championship team is comprised of talented baseball players from all over the county.
Yet, when discussing the success the team has enjoyed in recent years, players say what happens off the baseball field is as important as what occurs on it. "The number one thing," says infielder/catcher Jake Keane, "is if we didn't have this chemistry we would not have won the tournaments we've won. We're good friends and we've made a lot of memories on and off the field." The Chesapeake City Little League 9-10 softball All-Stars lost 19-1 to Sharpsburg Monday, July 20, in the state championship round.
After dropping the tourney opener, Chesapeake City won three straight games to make the final round but did not have its experienced pitchers available against Sharpsburg. Rising Sun Little League's 10-11 baseball team won its first two state tournament games over the weekend. Rising Sun is slated to play undefeated Delmar Tuesday night, July 21 at 6 p.m. at Arbutus Middle School. (Photos by Hope Wilburn)
