Cecil was ousted from the Babe Ruth regional tournament with a 2-1 loss to Schenectady, N.Y. last Thursday afternoon.
Brennan Martz, Dustin Krahn, Justin Frey, and Owen Null each had a hit for Cecil, who mustered just seven hits and one run in the tournament. Cecil went up in the top of the second. With one out, David Jackson reached on an error, Frey walked, and Null singled to load the bases. Jackson scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Roosevelt. Schenectady took the lead with two runs in the home half of the third. Cecil had an outstanding opportunity to tie the game or take the lead in the sixth, but left the bases loaded. The Skipjacks were retired in order in the seventh. Cecil's starting pitcher, Roosevelt, recorded five strikeouts in five innings of work. Martz fanned two in a perfect inning. Cecil dropped its first game of the Babe Ruth regional tournament 2-0 to host Pine Forge (Pa.) Wednesday night.
David Jackson pitched brilliantly for Cecil, giving up two hit and no earned runs. Pine Forge scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings. Cecil stranded seven runners in scoring position including second and third in the first inning. Jake Keane, Dustin Krahn, and Tyler Ferguson each had a hit for Cecil. The Skipjacks return to action Thursday at 4 p.m., needing a win to stay alive. The Cecil Skipjacks Babe Ruth state championship team is comprised of talented baseball players from all over the county.
Yet, when discussing the success the team has enjoyed in recent years, players say what happens off the baseball field is as important as what occurs on it. "The number one thing," says infielder/catcher Jake Keane, "is if we didn't have this chemistry we would not have won the tournaments we've won. We're good friends and we've made a lot of memories on and off the field." The Cecil Skipjacks baseball team won the state Babe Ruth championship for the second straight season and third time in five years.
"I'm proud of these boys and the heart they showed capturing the state title," manager Jim Martz said.
