The Rising Sun field hockey team admitted it was disgruntled it hadn't been able to muster a regulation goal despite dominating play for much of the game. It didn't take long into overtime to end the Tigers' frustration. Meghan Szkalak scored 38 seconds into the extra session to propel Rising Sun to a 1-0 triumph over host North East in the second round of the region tournament Thursday afternoon. "Emily Fanning was taking it from the dash right before the circle," Szkalak said. "And she just pushed it in, I tipped it, and it went in. [A North East defender], I think she hit it, too."
The Tigers reacted as those they were surprised to finally get the elusive goal. "We froze," said Megan Given. "We didn't move." Once they realized what had happened they hurried down the field to celebrate with goalie Bethany Wilson as their teammates poured off the sidelines. "It was great. It was a great feeling," said Szkalak. Coach Katie Keyes was confident heading into overtime. "It ended as we would've liked in overtime," Keyes said. "We practice overtime a bunch, particularly for times like this. So I feel like we were prepared for overtime. I know the girls are really pumped to go into overtime and I feel like they were prepared since we practice it a bunch." Rising Sun outshot North East 18-1 and had 12 corners compared to two for the Indians. "It was really frustrating," Szkalak said. "It was at our offensive circle the whole time and we were all so close. And then to finally get it in was a good feeling." Added Keyes: "We did dominate most of the game and we just could not finish. I definitely was stressed. I'll say that. But I definitely have faith in our team and I know they've worked hard and they really wanted it so it worked out." Indians' goalie Erika Schmidt recorded 17 stops to help keep her team in the game. Maya Allen, Ellie Smith, and Virginia Edwards each made a defensive save. The Tigers struggled down the stretch against Chesapeake Division foes but are optimistic Thursday's win will provide the momentum boost they needed heading into Monday's game at North Harford. "We played a really good game but we just need to finish," Keyes said. "Now they know they can do it. They should be confident going into Monday's game." Comments are closed.
