Rising Sun wrestling battled to a 42-37 victory over visiting Perryville on Wednesday, January 25. "We had high expectations coming in and then we had a couple of injuries and a couple of guys go down. We only have one of our three senior captains healthy. So its kind of put a dim on our season when it comes to dual meets. So this is one that we had circled as a winnable one that would mean a lot to the kids. Our guys went out there and wrestled hard," said Perryville head coach Thad Gough. The Panthers gained a 12-0 lead over the Tigers after Alonso Magana pinned Jarrett McMillian at 170. Eugene Zacerous won by forfeit at 182. Rising Sun tied with Perryville after receiving pins from Taylor Cimorosi (195) and Joe Jones (220).
Perryville's Hunter Zacerous notched a 15-7 major decision over Noah Ulrich at 138 giving the the Panthers a 31-30 lead. "Zacerous really turned the buck around. If you look at his record, all of his losses this year have been to guys who are either out of state or ranked in the state. So he has really stepped up his game. He has really come to do something this year," said Gough. "Zacerous is very athletic, it seemed like everything Ulrich did he had some sort of answer to. So every point became a reversal and back points for him," said Rising Sun head coach Cory Hall. By the final match of the night, the Panthers were leading by a point. Rising Sun closed the gap with a forfeit win from Richie Moore (160). Bringing the score to 37-36. The Tigers' Riley Johnson defeated Nathan David at 152 giving the Tigers the points needed to prevail. Johnson expressed that it came as a surprise to him that his match determined if they would win or lose. "At this point in the season, kids start getting sick, kids start breaking down and line ups start to change and it makes it crazy for coaches but thats what we had out there tonight. It came down to the last match and that match could have gone either way," said Hall. "Sometimes it is when you are at your physical weakest that you become stronger. The team needed him without a doubt tonight and he was able to put aside his sickness and he showed up and we're able to continue moving forward with our regional hopes alive." Comments are closed.
