The Cecil Skipjacks baseball team won the state Babe Ruth championship for the second straight season and third time in five years.
"I'm proud of these boys and the heart they showed capturing the state title," manager Jim Martz said. Perryville volleyball coach Matt Borrelli compared his program to the Buffalo Bills referring to the fact that the NFL team played in four straight Super Bowls without winning one.
If the Panthers are like the Bills then Smithsburg can be compared to the San Francisco 49ers. Seeking its first state title, Perryville was swept by 10-time champion Smithsburg Friday night at Ritchie Coliseum in College Park. The Leopards triumphed 25-9, 25-13, 25-12. Bohemia Manor junior Ty Franks won his third Class 1A state cross country title Saturday at Hereford High School.
Franks completed the course in 16:26, 42 seconds ahead of second place Levi Cameron of Northern (Garrett). Cecil captured the 16-18 Maryland Babe Ruth baseball title by winning all four of its games in Taneytown. Shorthanded Cecil had just nine players in two of the four games. "I have never been more proud of a group nine or 10 players than these knuckleheads," manager Jim Martz said. "The opponents were quality teams. We faced strong pitching and great defense. This was no small accomplishment." The Perryville Little League All-Stars captured the Maryland Senior Division softball state championship by taking two straight from Delmar Saturday.
Emily Phillips and Melissa Savin each tossed a shutout as Perryville won both games by the same 10-0 margin in five innings in the two-team tournament held in Delmar. It is the fourth state title for several Perryville players. Perryville advances to the East Region tournament which will be held in Worcester, Mass. beginning July 25. Perryville fought off a feisty North East squad 7-6 in seven innings to capture the Little League Maryland District 5 Major Division softball tournament Thursday night at Trego Field. North East, who needed to beat Perryville twice to claim the crown, trailed 5-1 before rallying for four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Perryville responded with two in the top of the seventh before hanging on to claim the district banner. Sarah Pender started the seventh inning with an opposite field single to left and promptly stole second. Krystyn Gardner followed with a little popup between the plate and the circle that went for an infield hit. Mara Little then roped the first pitch to left for an RBI single. After the runners moved up on a passed ball, Payton Jourdan plated a run with a fielder's choice grounder to first as Gardner was ruled to have slid under the tag at the plate. Bohemia Manor sophomore Ty Franks continues to chase records.
The way he runs it's no surprise he's catching them quickly. Franks won his ninth career state title with a dominating performance in the 3200 meter run Thursday on day one of the state track and field meet at Morgan State University. Perryville's Chris Brown won his fourth Battle at the Bridge tournament title and Rising Sun's Nelson Phillips captured his first-ever high school championship Saturday at Bohemia Manor.
Complete story and photographs will be printed in the January 14 issue of The Herald Leading for nearly the entire meet, the Perryville boys track and field team found themselves trailing entering the final event to be cored – the triple jump. Fortunately for the Panthers, they had Brian Matthews. Matthews, an accidental triple jumper of sorts, leaped 45-5.5 on his final try to win the event and clinch a second straight state title for the Perryville squad. Teammate Nate Cardinale also came through in the event, placing fifth to help Perryville outscore second place Boonsboro 95.5 to 90. |
