Bohemia Manor sophomore Ty Franks continues to chase records. The way he runs it's no surprise he's catching them quickly. Franks won his ninth career state title with a dominating performance in the 3200 meter run Thursday on day one of the state track and field meet at Morgan State University. In winning the event for the second time, Franks (9:53) defeated second place Grant Dell of North Carroll by 11 seconds.
Perryville's Adam Thornton was third and Franks' teammate Chandler Brooks finished eighth. Perryville prevailed in the girls 4 x 200 relay. Taesha Andre, Angelica Conway, and Alysa Conway raced the Panthers to a lead when the baton was handed to anchor Autumn Estep. On the turn for home it appeared Surrattsville and New Town might catch Estep, but the Panthers' sophomore had other ideas, and finished strong to preserve the victory. Perryville (1:44.4) topped Surrattsville by .51 of a second and New Town by .81 of a second. The Panthers (Estep, Krissy McDuff, Jordan Dodson, and Tori Antoshak placed second in the 4 x 600 relay. Bohemia Manor (Tara McDonald, Chelby McCall, Marisa Koulen, and Jamie Rhudy finished sixth. The Panthers' Sierra Montz was third in the triple jump with teammate Brooke Doane seventh. The Perryville girls also excelled in the pole vault. Paiton Kelly was eighth, Hailey McDonald tied for 6th, and Natalie Owens finished fifth. With five events finished, Perryville (34.5) leads the 1A girls team competition over Smithsburg (31) and Manchester Valley (30.5). RELATED: Click HERE to view photos from the region track meet. Bohemia Manor (Damion Puzzo, Chandler Brooks, Luke Salata, and Franks were third in the 4 x 800 with Perryville (Tyler McCall, Caleb Stevens, Ben Douty, and Mitchell Johansen) fourth. Elijah Johnson of Perryville placed fifth in the long jump. On the boys side after six events, Bohemia Manor (17) is third with reigning two-time champion Perryville sixth. North East pole vaulter Dean Palmer also turned in an outstanding performance. Palmer finished fourth in the 2A competition by clearing 13-6. He topped his previous best mark by a foot and is believed to have established a county record. Elkton's Zyphere Ruffin finished fifth in the long jump. Perryville's Jordan Dodson placed eighth in the 3200 meter run. North East's Susan Travis was ninth in the discus. The Panthers' Andre qualified for the finals in the 200 meter dash, which will be contested Saturday. Sierra Montz qualified for the high hurdles finals.
