Winning pitcher Sam Hogue belted two home runs and knocked in seven as Rising Sun clinched the District 5 Major Division baseball title with a 15-0 win over Elkton in four innings Friday night at Eder Park. After Hogue struck out the side in the top of the first, Rising Sun rallied for 11 runs in the home half to take a commanding lead. Beni Gilcher walked and Mason Craig singled past the third baseman. After a passed ball, Ethan Pierce smashed a two-run double up the left-center alley. Following an out and a walk to Jason Mock, Joey Trout bounced an RBI single over the head of the third baseman to make it 3-0.
Cade Eyman walked to load the bases. The next batter struck out but the ball got loose. It only went a few feet from the plate but Mock was able to slide home ahead of the tag. Rising Sun tacked on two more runs on an error and a wild pitch. Gilcher lined an RBI single to center. After a hit batsman and walk, Hogue drilled a grand slam to left-center. Rising Sun scored four more runs in the bottom of the third, capped off by a three-run shot by Hogue to center field. Hogue recorded seven strikeouts in three innings of work. Brayden Patterson pitched the fourth to complete the shutout. Rising Sun outscored its three opponents by a combined 47-6 in the district tournament. Rising Sun advances to the state tournament which starts Saturday in Easton. Many of the same Rising Sun players – Hogue, Gilcher, Craig, Pierce, Mock, Trout, Eyman, Patterson, Adam Snyder, and Pierce – teamed to win a state championship last summer in the 10-11 age group.
