The Rising Sun boys soccer team is primed for a big season.
Coach Ken Ulrich says the Tigers boast a great deal of depth. "We have two good players at every position," he said. Rising Sun will rely heavily on its three captains – back Christian Scott, midfielder Cody Thomas, and striker Michael Catena. It should be another successful season for the Perryville cross country teams.
The Panther boys won the state title last season. Replicating that feat will be a difficult task, but always-optimistic Perryville coach Jake Moore expects his squad to be competitive. The Rising Sun girls cross country team returns its top seven runners from last season and has added two promising newcomers.
Autumn Russell has been the Tigers' top performer over the last two seasons. Emma Wheeler is expected to challenge Russell for the top spot. It will be a transition year for the Perryville girls soccer program.
The Panthers won three games last year before a penalty kick shootout loss to Kent in the playoffs. "It's going to be a growing season," said coach Kristy O'Hara. Most of Perryville's experience is on defense. "I'm very confident in our backfield and defense," O'Hara said. It's going to be an exciting season for the Rising Sun girls soccer team. The Tigers return 10 starters from last year's team and have added two dynamic freshmen. Ciara Bartz, the starting goalie before being injured last season, returns. She is being challenged by freshman Mackenzie Smith. "It's been even and a good competition," coach Dylan Aiman said. The Perryville football team still has some gamebreaking skill-position players including one of the state's top two-way players in receiver/free safety Tyrell Hollingsworth. But coach Chris Johnson says the Panthers' success will be determined by a talented but inexperienced offensive line and what he hopes will be a rejuvenated defense. Perryville graduated four of its five offensive line starters from last year's team that went 7-5. "I think the most important unit on a football team is the offensive line," said Johnson. "You will only go as far as your offensive line will take you." You play like you practice.
Rising Sun football coach Rich Opp is a firm believer in that mantra. "We want to win more football games," the second-year coach said. "And that will come to fruition if we improve daily in practices. That will improve our record." Some of the names have changed but the expectations remain the same.
The Perryville volleyball team fully expects to challenge for a fourth-straight trip to the state tournament. Perryville has enjoyed an unprecedented run of success recently including three straight region titles – two losses in the state title game and a state semifinal defeat last year. The aspirations never change for the Rising Sun volleyball team.
Once again, the Tigers' goal is getting to the state tournament. And as is usually the case, that goal is a realistic one. Rising Sun finished 18-1 last year, falling to Poolesville in the state semifinals. |
