The game lived up to the hype. In a hotly-anticipated playoff rematch, Harford Tech's boys basketball team ousted Elkton for the second straight season. Jordan Bright hit the go-ahead free throw with 19.7 seconds left then blocked a three-point attempt by the Elks' Dah'Mear Triplett at the buzzer to secure a wild 70-69 triumph. Elkton had taken an eight-point lead (62-54) on a Triplett basket with 6:03 remaining. The Cobras countered with a 12-0 uprising to go up by four with 2:50 to go. Jalen Dangerfield scored six points in that span. The Elks responded thanks to three big plays by Marquis Battle. He saved an Elkton possession by throwing the ball off a Tech player as he was sprawling out of bounds. Triplett drained a three-pointer to narrow the gap to 66-65 with 1:17 left. Battle then fed Ryan Thompson for a layup to give the hosts a 67-66 edge. Finally, Battle scored on a putback to pad the Elks lead to 69-66 with 57 seconds to play. The Elkton girls basketball team nipped Harford Tech 47-45 in the second round of the region tournament Tuesday, February 27.
Allison Rogers hit the go-ahead bucket with 42 seconds left and the Elkton girls basketball withstood a wild final 20 seconds to post a 48-46 Valentine's Day victory over visiting Harford Tech.
Courtney Hardy's career game helped the Elkton girls basketball team top Tome 61-47 Wednesday afternoon, January 3. Hardy poured in 32 points to power the Elks to the victory. It is the most points Hardy has scored at any level, surpassing her previous best of 24 in an AAU contest. She knew early it was going to be a big night. "I really started off the game on a hot streak," Hardy said. "I started out with a bunch of points and once I start scoring I get my energy up and then I try to keep scoring. Usually I don't score until the second quarter and start off slow but when I started scoring at the very beginning of the first quarter I try to keep going." Despite losing the season opener at Elkton 64-28 last Thursday night, Rising Sun girls basketball coach Kathy Stoudt is not discouraged. Far from it.
The Perryville wrestling team opened the season with a 72-10 triumph over visiting Elkton last Wednesday afternoon.
The Panthers won three of the five contested matches and received eight forfeits. Thomas Wolfe never met Charles Givens Sr. The noted author's 1940 posthumously published book was titled "You Can't Go Home Again". Givens has proven to be an exception. He has gone back home for a second time. The longtime Perryville High boys basketball coach is entering his first season at the helm of his hometown school, Elkton. Givens coached a total of 40 years at Perryville, leaving for a six-year stint as an assistant principal at Elkton, before returning to Perryville to coach for four more campaigns. Now, he's back in Elkton. "There was an opening and I live in the community," Givens said. "It's a good opportunity to coach kids from an area that I know. Some people always see change as something they try to resist but I didn't resist change." Bohemia Manor's Zach Laird demonstrated the power of positive thinking.
Laird relied on some personal affirmation while traversing the (understatement alert) hilly terrain at bucolic Hereford High School Saturday afternoon, "I'm winning this," he repeated to himself. Laird was correct. The Eagles' junior captured the individual Class 1A state crown while leading the Eagles to the team title. Zach Laird won the boys 1A East Region race to help the Bohemia Manor boys capture a 10th straight region crown last Thursday afternoon at Fair Hill.
